1) Has A History Dating Back To The Early Medieval Period
Yes, the history of Vedaranyam dates back to the early Medieval Period when the region was under the control of the Chola dynasty. As per a few ancient texts, it was in existence in the 7th century.

Located on the outskirts of Vedaranyam at a distance of about 10 km, Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary was established in the year 1967 and is spread over an area of about 22 sq km. It is generally noted for its bird population. However, you can also find several species of animals and plants within its boundaries. If you are a wildlife photographer, then you must not miss visiting this beautiful expanse.
The major species found here include blackbuck, spotted deer, bottlenose dolphin, spot-billed pelican, spoonbill, lesser flamingo and collared doves. The sanctuary also houses a few heritage sites such as Ramar Padam, Modi Mandapam, Navakodi Sitthar Aalayam and Chola Lighthouse.
