The beautiful temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath or the Lord of the Universe, Vishnu. The present structure was built in 1198, the entry to the temple is strictly for Hindus..

The presiding deity of Jagannath is worshiped along with his siblings Balbhadra and Subhadra. The idols are carved out of neem logs and dressed according to the climatic conditions of the region. An interesting factor here is that the idols here are incomplete and get changed every 8 to 12 years, or a maximumof 18.

The idols are ceremoniously replaced by new ones and the old ones are buried with all due respect within the temple premises at Kolli Vaikuntha.
