Popular Krishna Temples of North India

The popular Indian festival ‘Krishna Janmashtami' is round the corner and on this occasion the Hindus celebrate the birthday of Lord Krishna with great vigor all over the country. Being the land of temples, India is not deficient of shrines dedicated to Lord Krishna. Both northern and southern India has a number of Krishna shrines that are rich in heritage and architecture, where ‘Janmashtami' is the main celebration.

Among various temples dedicated to many deities, one can see some of the most popular Krishna shrines in North India. Many of these temples have themes based on the events that took place during the lifetime of Lord Krishna. The temples have a rich history and are also archaeological masterpieces.

Kesava Deo Temple, Mathura

One of the most coveted Lord Krishna temple in India is the Kesava Deo temple at Mathura. Said to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna, the city of Mathura holds a special place for the followers of the Lord. Believed to be a monument of the Gupta period, this temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna also called as Kesava. Festivities such as ‘Janmashtami', ‘lathamar holi, ‘chhappan bhog' and more are celebrated here every year, which attracts people from all over the country.

Dwarakadheesh Temple, Gujarat

With it's amazing architecture, the Dwarakadheesh Temple is located at Dwarka in Gujarat. Lord Krishna here is worshiped in the name of ‘Dwarkadhish' which translates to ‘Ruler of Dwarka'.

This shrine is said to have been constructed by Lord Krishna's grandson, Vajranabha during the 16th century, after the city of Dwarka submerged in the ocean. The temple consists of a five storied building and 72 pillars and is said to be about 2,500 years old.

ISKCON Temple, Delhi

Also known as the Sri Sri Radha Parthasarathi Mandir, the ISKCON temple at Delhi is a shrine dedicated to Lord Krishna and Goddess Radhrani. Established in the year 1998, this temple is found on the Hare Krishna Hills. In addition, this ISKCON temple consists of large halls and rooms for the use of priests.

Govind Dev Ji Temple, Jaipur

Situated at the City Palace Complex in Jaipur, Rajasthan, the Govind Dev Ji Temple is another shrine in north India that is dedicated to Lord Krishna. The idol of the Lord present in this Temple was transferred from the Mathura Temple by Raja Sawai Jai Singh II. For the devotees of Lord Krishna and also the Vaishnavites, this shrine of Lord Krishna is an important one.
