The literal meaning of Unakoti translates into ‘one less than a crore' in Bengali. Dating back to the 7th century, Unakoti is a revered religious site devoted to the Hindu mythological figure of Lord Shiva. Its architectural grandeur is breathtaking, with age-old timeless carvings adorning the hilly slants of the place. Legend has it that the brilliant sculptor Kallu Kumar had carved these figures, as Lord Shiva had instructed him to do so in a dream. There are idols of other Hindu mythological figures as well, like Lord Vishnu, Ganesha, Nandi, Narsimha, Hanuman and many other Goddesses, of which many deities remain unidentified.
