The Quintessential Town of Darasuram

One of the lesser known districts of Tamil Nadu is the village of Darasuram. Originally known as Rajarajapuram this place is famous for its many temples each having its own distinct significance.

Devotees come here from far and wide to visit the many temples here, and pay their respects to the lords. Travellers coming here can enjoy the serenity of this place, and also explore the many temples.

Airavatesvara Temple

One of the places to visit in Darasuram is the Airavatesvara Temple, which is dedicated to Airavata, the white elephant of the king of devas, and Lord Shiva. It is believed that Airavata worshipped Lord Shiva here to rid him of a curse, which was cast on him by Sage Durvasa. In order to show his gratitude to the lord he built this temple. There is also a legend which says that Lord Yama, the God of Death, worshipped Lord Shiva here. Devotees come to this temple to pay respect to the lord as they believe that whatever they pray for here will be fulfilled by him. Tourists coming here can marvel at the architecture of the temple and also see the inscriptions carved into the walls of the temple.

Papanasam

A major tourist place in Darasuram is the town of Papanasam, which when translated to english means 'Destruction of Sins'. The town is famous for the Pallaivanatha Swamy Temple, where devotees come to confess their sins. There is a river that flows beside the river and devotees believe that a dip in this river will cleanse them of all their sins. Tourists coming here can marvel at the architecture of the temple and also take a stroll along the banks of the river.

Patteeswaram

Another place to visit in Darasuram is serene village of Patteeswaram, which is named after the calf of Kamadhenu, Patti. Legend has it that the calf was an ardent worshipper of Lord Shiva. The village is also famous as Lord Rama is said to have come here and installed three Shivalingas. Tourists coming here can visit the shrine which was built in honour of Patti and also enjoy the serenity of this place.

Tirunallur

Another place to visit in Darasuram is the village of Tirunallur, which is famous for its Kalyanasundareswar Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is said to have been built during the Chola Dynasty. Devotees come from far and wide to worship the lord here. Tourists coming here can visit the temple and also explore the nearby regions.

How to Reach Darasuram

By Air: The closest airport to Darasuram is at Trichy at a distance of 98 km. It is well-connected with Chennai and Coimbatore.

By Train: Darasuram has its own railway station. It is not a major one but has trains that ply to Kumbakonam and Thanjavur on a regular basis.

By Road: Travelling to Darasuram by road is the easiest and most cost effective option. Buses from Kumbakonam to Darasuram ply on a regular basis. It is also possible to board buses from major cities like Salem and Thanjavur to travel here.
