An ancient city that is considered to be over a thousand years old, Cuttack in the state of Odisha is picturesquely set on the banks of rivers Mahanadi and Kathajodi. It is the second largest city in the state and a hub for commercial activities, such progress has earned the city the tag of 'Millenium City' of Odisha. A popular tourism hub along with its twin city Bhubaneshwar, Cuttack also serves as an entry point to the various tourist destinations in the state.

The old city of Cuttack has plenty of tourist attractions from the Stone Revetments that protect the river banks built in the 11th century to the modern day river cruises across Mahanadi. Netaji Birth Place Museum

Netaji Birth Place Museum

Cuttack is famous for being the birthplace of one of India's famous personalities and leaders, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. At a small entry fee, you can explore India's history through the personal experiences of this prominent figure at the Netaji Birth Place Museum. The museum is located in what was once Netaji's home, a simple two-storey structure that takes you on a mesmerising journey of his life and struggles. A noteworthy feature are the many letters written by the leader. Photography is prohibited inside the premises. It is located at the heart of the city, about 10 km from the railway station and is a must-visit place in Cuttack.

Barabati Fort

Barabati Fort

The ruins of the Barabati Fort built by the Ganga Empire in the 14th century is a must-visit place in Cuttack. Located at a distance of 8 km from the city center, the fort is located at the apex of river Mahanadi and provides to be a scenic tourist place. The remains of the fort include the functioning main gate called 'Gada Khai', the surrounding moat, gate and palace mound that used to be nine storeys high. The Barabati stadium is located nearby and hosts various sports and cultural events. A temple of the presiding deity of 'Gadachandi' is also located here.

Mahanadi Barrage

Mahanadi Barrage

One of the lesser enjoyed pleasures that Cuttack offers are the magnificent views of river Mahanadi from the barrage. Built to prevent flooding, the dam is one of the oldest in the country. It boasts of opulent waters and a variety of fish thrive here, promoting fresh water fishing activities. The roads are also great for a scenic drive or bicycle ride.

Dhabaleswar

Among the places to visit in Cuttack is the beautiful isle of Dhabaleshwar situated on the Mahanadi river. It is important as a religious destination in the city for the famous Shiva temple here, known as the Dhabaleshwar temple. The island is especially famous as a tourist attraction because of the scenic boat rides that take you to the island. An alternate is to travel by the hanging bridge, which also offers panoramic views of the surrounding.

Kataka Chandi Temple

An important pilgrimage centre, the Kataka Chandi Temple attracts devotees from all over the world. The temple devoted to the worship of the Goddess Chandi is usually crowded. People throng the temple to seek blessings for a healthy and prosperous life. The idols are beautifully decorated for the various rituals, making the 'Darshan' a wonderful experience. The Durga Puja festival is conducted at the temple in an elaborate fashion and is an ideal time to visit if you want to experience the true cultural and spiritual significance.

Deer Park

Among the famous attractions in Cuttack is the lovely Deer Park. The park located in Madhusudan Nagar is set amidst greenery and visitors can relax under the shade. It is popular among both children and adults for the animated deer that run around the park.

Kathjodi River

Kathjodi River

A popular tourist place near Cuttack is the Kathjodi River, which is an arm of the famous Mahanadi River. The river is a scenic location, and travellers can enjoy the relaxed surroundings and beautiful sunsets from here. The place also has the famed Hansanath Temple, built in the worship of Lord Shiva. The region especially comes alive during the festive season of Maha Shivratri.

Mahanadi Cruise

Mahanadi Cruise

A popular tourist activity in the city of Cuttack is the Mahanadi Cruise. It is the first of it's kind in the region and has double-decker cruise vessels that take travellers on an unforgettable journey across the river. The vessel is equipped with modern amenities and also serves food. The seating capacity is around 60, and multiple trips are made through the day.

Cuttack is popular for it's mouth-watering street-food and snacks. You can try popular snacks such as the dahi bara, gupchup and aloo dum to name a few. How to Reach Cuttack

By Road: Cuttack is well-connected by a network of national and state highways to all major cities. Both state and private bus transport is available to Cuttack.

By Rail: The Cuttack Railway Junction is a prominent stop on the Kolkata-Chennai main line and has many regular trains connecting the city to major destinations in the country.

By Air: The nearest airport is the Biju Patnaik International Airport at Bhubaneshwar, located 30 km from Cuttack. Flights are available to all major destinations in the country and outside.
