Places in India Where Women Are Not Allowed

By Siji Ram

India is a nation that allows each individual to choose his/her religion or faith. On one hand we have many temples, churches, mosques, gurudwaras and other religious sites where they practise their respective religions, and on the other hand we have a few of these religious sites where only men are allowed.

Let us take a look at some of these places in India where women are not allowed.

Sabarimala, Kerala

Sabarimala, the abode of Lord Ayyappa, is located in the Periyar Tiger Reserve of Pathanamthitta district in Kerala. Women (12-50years) are not allowed inside the temple.

Haji Ali Dargah, Mumbai

Haji Ali Dargah in Mumbai is another site that does not allow women to enter the premises. According to Islam, a female entering a Muslim saint's grave is considered a grievous sin.

Kartikeya Temple, Haryana

Kartikeya Temple in Pehowa of Haryana is a religious site that has prohibited the entry of women in its premises. This temple worships the brahmachari (celibate) form of Lord Kartikeya.

Jain Temple, Ranakpur

Though this temple does not have a ban on women, it has clear instructions on a board that tells how and when a woman should enter the temple. Menstruating women are not allowed here, like almost every temple. A woman, while entering the temple, should cover her legs till below the knees.

Kartikeya Temple, Pushkar

There is a popular belief here that Lord Kartikeya, who is a celibate, would curse any woman who enters the temple premises. Thus, women are restricted entry here.

Nizamuddin Dargah, Delhi

Though women are allowed into the premises of Nizamuddin Dargah in Delhi, they are not allowed inside the chamber where the 14th century Sufi saint lived, died and was buried.

Bhavani Deeksha Mandapam, Vijayawada

No women are allowed to enter the sanctum sanctorum here. Interestingly, after the death of the temple's priest, his daughter Jayanti Vimala was appointed as the priest by the government, though she was still not allowed to enter the sanctum sanctorum.

Jama Masjid, Delhi

Women are not allowed in the premises of the mosque after sunset for the Maghrib prayers.
