Marvels of 'Eastern Gibraltar': A Photo Tour of Vijaydurg Fort

Vijaydurg Fort was a stronghold of Maratha Empire and it was one of the impregnable forts in those times.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was one of the greatest rulers in the Indian history and his reign was considered to be the most golden time of the Maratha Empire.

It was during his time that many forts were built and also acquired in Maharashtra. Hence we can find several forts dotted across the state. Interestingly, some of them are also marine forts that played an integral role in the Maratha Empire.

The Vijaydurg Fort is one among the defence forts that was invaded and revamped by Chhatrapati Shivaji.Today, the Vijaydurg Fort is one of the important attractions in Sindhudurg district. This was once a marine fort (surrounded by sea on all sides); however, later a road was constructed to connect it to the mainland. Now, the Vijaydurg Fort is surrounded by the sea on three sides.

The Marathas used Vijaydurg Fort as a prominent location for the Maratha warship. The fort which is surrounded by the Arabian Sea and Kharepatan Creek made it even more difficult for the invaders. Hence, the British called it as the 'Eastern Gibraltar'.
