Nizamat Imambara was first built by Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah with his own hands. It was built after digging 6 ft deep into the ground and refilling it with soil, which was brought from Mecca so that even the poor Muslims would have a chance to experience Hajji.

It was mostly built of wood which was partly destroyed by fire in the year 1842. Later, on 26th December, it was completely destroyed by a fire caused by leftover fireworks from a weaning ceremony. Nothing survived the second fire except the old Madina mosque. A year later, this holy monument was rebuilt by Nawab Nazib Mansur Ali Khan just opposite to Hazarduari Palace.
