The Indian government has closed more than 50 national parks for the monsoon season, which runs from June to September. The parks are located across the country and span from the Himalayas in the north to the Nilgiris in southern India.
National parks are the lungs of our nation and they provide a vast range of services like tourism, conservation, education, and research to the people of India. These parks have immense biodiversity and they serve as important breeding grounds for wildlife species
Many national parks in India are now closed for the monsoon season because it is not only dangerous for tourists but also for animals who depend on these areas for shelter from extreme weather conditions.
The following national parks are now closed for the monsoon season:
1) Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand:
Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand has been temporarily closed for public entry from June 1 to August 31, 2022. The park authorities have issued an advisory that the visitors can only enter the park from September 1 to October 31 and from November 1 to December 31. However, Dhela and Jhirna Zones are kept open.
2) Kaziranga National Park, Assam:
It is one of the largest national parks and tiger reserves in India and is also home to one-horned rhinoceros that are listed as endangered animals. The park also has many species of birds which include hornbills, woodpeckers, and kingfishers. The park will remain closed from 1st May to 1st October as heavy rain lashed the park premises.
3) Manas National Park, Assam:
The park will remain closed from 1st May to 1st October as heavy rain lashed the park premises as Assam will have heavy rainfall and the weather might become challenging. You can avoid visiting this side of the country where chances of floods are high to avoid difficulties in your trip.
4) Kanha National Park, Madhya Pradesh:
Kanha National Park has a rich variety of flora and fauna. It has world-famous tigers, leopards, and elephants. Other animals include blackbucks, chinkaras, sambar deer, and Indian rhinoceros. The park also houses many rare birds like hornbills, owls, and parrots among others. The forest department has decided to close the park for the next three months as it is getting flooded due to heavy rains and overflowing rivers. The park is expected to remain closed for three months starting from June 20 to September 20, 2022.
5) Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh:
The National Park is located in the heart of the Satpura Range in central India and is known for its rich biodiversity. Where you can spot the Royal Bengal tiger. June to September it will remain closed due to heavy rainfall. However, one can visit the buffer zones of Panpatha, Johila, and Dhamokhar.
6) Gir National Park, Gujarat:
Gir is one of the largest parks in India and it's known for its biodiversity, wildlife, and scenery. The park has a rich history dating back to several thousands of years ago when this area was inhabited by early inhabitants of India. The Gir National Park in Gujarat has been closed for tourists and visitors as the monsoon season is upon us. The park has been closed for the past few days and will remain so until further notice.
