The oldest known dock in the world, Lothal's dock was one of its kind and had played a crucial role in the export of several materials from Lothal to other parts of the world, such as Africa and West Asia. Lothal's settlement on the banks of Saraswati river was an advantage to the businessmen, as a result of which this small settlement by the river converted into a major trade centre within a negligible amount of time.

It is not possible for anyone to exist and stay without water. Apart from being an important trade centre, Lothal was ahead of its time and thereby, it thought of digging wells to provide its people with the freshest and purest form of water. However, today you can only see the ruins of these dried wells.

Lothal was highly cultured and advanced and the scientific setting of this city certainly proves the fact. It cannot be denied that the people of Lothal were intelligent and clever, after witnessing the extraordinary architecture of this city.

Being a significant trade centre, it is expected from Lothal to have a warehouse. This stockroom was used to put raw and manufactured goods and materials before their distribution for sale. This vast warehouse of Lothal was built on a platform and housed goods in large numbers.

It is believed that there were several other small warehouses in and around Lothal which are still buried under the lanes of its history. How about paying a visit to Lothal and exploring this wonderfully built storeroom?

Acropolis was the commercial and political centre of Lothal. Located in the heart of the city, Acropolis was home to several houses and baths on a platform, which was in a rectangular shape. You can also see here the wonderfully planned drainage system.

On other hand was the Lower Town, which was also one of the major parts of Lothal and housed workshops, residences and other private buildings. The bead factory was also a part of this wonderful space.

If you are looking forward to watching the ancient artefacts found in the excavation of Lothal, then the archaeological museum is located on the west side of the ruins. Situated at an approximate distance of 78 km from Ahmedabad, Lothal is easily accessible by road. You can either take a cab from Ahmedabad or catch a bus from Ahmedabad to Lothal.

If you are looking to travel by train, then you can catch a train from Ahmedabad to Bhurkhi and then from there take a local bus to Lothal.

Best Time To Visit Lothal

Lothal has a hot and semi-arid climate and on account of its climatic conditions, it is advisable to avoid visiting Lothal during the summer season. If you are looking to sit beside the ruins and explore its history comfortably, then the best time to visit Lothal is from November until the end of March.
