Delhi is popular for its monuments; these places are known world-wide. Yet, there are many places that can be explored in the city. Lodhi Gardens in Delhi is a relic of an ancient era, older than Mughal age.
Lodhi Gardens is a lesser known monument of Delhi. It has the tombs of Mohammad Shah, Sikandar Lodhi, Sheesh Gumbad and Bara Gumbad. These are the architecture of Lodhi's, an Afghan dynasty that ruled North India and Pakisthan in 15th C.
The tomb of Mohammad Shah, built in 1444, is the earliest of all tombs in the garden. Sikandar Lodhi's tomb was built by Ibrahim Lodi, the last sultan of Lodhi dynasty.
Lodhi dynasty was defeated by Babur in 1526, thus began the Mughal empire in India. During British Raj, the park was named as 'Lady Willingdon Park'. After Independence, it was renamed as Lodhi Gardens.
Lodhi Gardens is preserved by ASI, as its the surviving monument of that era. Today, Lodhi Gardens is popular among morning walkers, children and yoga enthusiasts.
The tombs has a combinations of Hindu and Islamic style architecture. Hindu features are the eight chhatris, ornamental pinnacles in the corner and so on. With all its art and architecture, it is a place to visit in Delhi.
