List Of India's Best Oligotrophic Lakes

Oligotrophic lakes are characterized by low dissolved oxygen content and high concentrations of nutrients like phosphorus, nitrogen, and phosphates. Oligotrophic are those that receive less than 1.5 times the amount of nutrients that they release into the water. The nutrient levels in such lakes can be so low that it is difficult for some organisms to survive. Oligotrophic lakes have a small water volume and a low oxygen concentration.

Sheshnag Lake

1) Sheshnag Lake is located in the Pir Panjal Range of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a high-altitude lake with an elevation of 2900 meters above sea level. The lake is fed by snowmelt from the Pir Panjal Range, which runs along its western side and also receives water from streams originating on the southern slopes of Nanga Parbat.

3) Gadsar Lake is an oligotrophic lake located in the Himalayan region of Kashmir valley, India. This lake is well known for its beauty, and variety of birds and fish. The surface area of this lake is about 0.7 km2 (0.3 sq mi). You can witness this lake's beauty between June and September.

4) Pangong Lake is an oligotrophic lake located in the Himalayas of Ladakh, India. It is situated 1,000 meters above sea level and has a maximum depth of approximately 300 meters. Pangong Lake has many tourist attractions including monasteries built by Tibetan Buddhist monks and a scenic drive along the length of its shoreline.

5) Tarsar Lake and Marsar Lake are oligotrophic lakes, meaning they have a relatively low nutrient load, which means that the water quality is not affected by human activities. Both lakes are very similar in terms of their physical characteristics, but there are some differences between them.

Tarsar Lake is deeper and wider than Marsar Lake, making it more suitable for recreational uses such as boating and fishing.

On the other hand, Marsar Lake has a lower water level than Tarsar Lake and has a greater concentration of algae than Tarsar Lake does.
