History of Kurudumale
Earlier, the region was under the rule of Chola dynasty and later it came under the Vijayanagar Kingdom. Diverse architectural elements within the Kurudumale Temple complex portrays the influences of these dynasties. In fact, the Someshwara Temple is said to be the oldest shrine in the Kurudumale complex and was constructed before the Ganesha Temple. Someshwara Temple (Shiva Temple) belongs to Chola dynasty whereas Ganesha Temple was built during the Vijayanagara period.

Legends of Kurudumale
As per the legends, the monolithic idol of Ganapathy was installed by the Great Trinities - Brahma, Vishu and Maheshwara. In the first mythological era, Satya Yuga, a demon named Tripurasura had become powerful and was creating a mayhem. So, a sage told the Trinities that a 'bachelor who enter matrimony yet lives a celibate life' can only kill this demon. Hence, all gods create Siddhi and Buddhi to marry Lord Ganesha. Surprisingly, this Tripurasura is still there in Kali Yuga (this age) and Lord Ganesha will finally kill him at the end of the era.
Another amusing story is that, this Ganesha idol has been here from four eras (epochs). Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dwapara Yuga and Kali Yuga (this age). Whatever it is, today Kurudumale Ganesha Temple in Kolar is one of the popular temples in Karnataka.

Interesting Facts About Kurudumale Temple
- Thirteen and a half feet Ganesha idol is said to be growing in size. A kind of optical illusion is said to be created when we look at this statue from different positions. Hence, a visit to this shrine makes it even more interesting.
- The Kurudumale Temple complex is located on a hill. Earlier, this hill was known as Kotadri which later became Kootmale. Further, delusions have given it the name Kurudumale.
- Another legend says, a nearby cave was occupied by the great sage Koundinya and he used to worship Lord Ganesha in this shrine.
- One peculiar thing happens at this temple every night! The chanting of 'OM' and music is said to resound in the temple premises at night. Local belief is that, Sage Koundinya still comes to this shrine and offer prayers on a daily basis. Interestingly, many locals have heard these sounds coming from the temple. It is also said that small 'ball of lights' glide over the surrounding areas and reach the temple during Ratha Sapthami. People believe devatas (Gods and Goddesses) carry these lights to worship Ganesha.

How to Reach Kurudumale Ganesha Temple
The town of Kurudumale is around 11km from Mulbagal and 104km from Bengaluru (Bangalore). Travellers can reach Mulbagal through KSRTC or trains which ply from Bengaluru. Take an auto rickshaw or a private cab from Mulbagal to reach Kurudumale Temple.
