Khandwa, The Town of Temples and Kunds

Khandwa is a beautiful tourist place located in the East Nimar district in Madhya Pradesh and is considered to be an old town with many temples and several ancient kunds. You can see many Jain and Hindu temples here.

During the British rule, Khandwa was considered to be the main commercial hub of the Nimaad region. The phenomenal singer Kishore Kumar was also born in here.

Tourist places in Khandwa are mostly ancient temples and kunds. Some of the prominent places to visit here include; The Bhavani Mata Temple, Dada Darbar, Nav Chandi Devi Dham, Omkareshwar Mandhata, Siddhawar Kut, Mamaleshwar, Asirgarh Fort, Indira Sagar Dam and Nagchun Dam.

Asirgarh Fort

Asirgarh Fort or Asigarh Qila is a prominent tourist place to visit in Khandwa. According to legends, it is believed that this fort can never be conquered by force. The fort is situated in the Satpura Range, and is 69 km away from Khandwa. Built right at the heart of the valleys, the Asirgarh Fort is connected to the Narmada valley and Tapti River through a pass via the Satpura Hills.

Ghanta Ghar

Ghanta Ghar is one of the important landmarks in the town of Khandwa and is also called the Clock Tower of Multan. It was constructed in 1884 by the British during their rule in India. It has four historic ponds or kunds in the four directions. These kunds are called Suraj Kund, Bhima Kund, Rameshwar Kund and Padma Kund. Of late there is a talk going on to convert it into a museum.

Dada Darbar

The Dada Darbar is another tourist place to visit and is located in the south-western part of Khandwa. This place is considered to be holy and the holy tombstones of Swami Keshwanandaji Maharaj and Swami Hariharanandji Maharaj, who are otherwise addressed as 'Bade Dadaji' and 'Chhote Dadaji' respectively rests here. An annual fair is held at the Dada Darbar on the auspicious day of Guru Purnima. Thousands of devotees from far and near across the country come here during the time of the fair.

Indira Sagar Dam

Indira Sagar Dam, built over the River Narmada in Khandwa at Narmadanagar, is Asia's most prestigious hydro power project. The sheer magnanimity of this dam makes this a must-visit tourist place in Khandwa. It is also called the Gosikhurd Project and was constructed with the sole aim of offering water to the nearby villages of Bhandara, Nagpur and Chandrapur districts. The site features a concrete gravity dam which is 92 mt tall and 653 mt long. If you are an enthusiastic traveller wanting a better look, you can reach this place via two stations, either from the Khandwa Railway Station or the railway station at Bir.

Gauri Kunj

Gauri Kunj is a memorial constructed in honour of the popular playback singer Kishore Kumar Ganguly. Khandwa is the birthplace of this legendary singer.The foundation stone was laid by the late singer's elder brother, actor Ashok Kumar. Although the memorial is dedicated to Kishore Kumar, the name of the auditorium is derived from his parents Gauridevi and Kunjilal Gangopadhyay. This place serves as a platform for all forms of arts and cultural activities. The Government of Madhya Pardesh and the local Municipal Corporation manages Gauri Kunj. If you are a fan of music and other cultural events then this is a place you must visit in Khandwa and attend one of the programmes held here.

How to Reach Khandwa

By Air: Though Khandwa has an airstrip situated on the Nagchun Road, it is only used for occasional landings. No flights are scheduled here. The nearest commercial airport to Khandwa is the Devi Ahilyabai Holkar International Airport which is located in Indore.

By Train: The Khandwa Railway Station has daily rail connections to important destinations in Madhya Pradesh such as Bhopal and Indore. There are frequent trains to Delhi, Bombay, Kolkata, Kochi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Jammu, Patna and many more places in India.

By Road: Khandwa can be reached by road through public transportation such as buses and taxis. Regular buses ply to Khandwa from the neighbouring places and the important places of Madhya Pradesh. The best way to come to Khandwa via road is to travel through Indore. It takes around three hours from Indore to reach Khandwa.
