ISKCON Temples – A Source of Bliss

Founded by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, ISKCON or The International Society for Krishna Consciousness is a global Hare Krishna Movement. This movement is meant to spread the word of devotion to Lord Krishna and it does it with a twist, a dance, a song, a rhythmic clap or simply a smile.

The beliefs are deeply rooted in the scriptures of Srimad Bhagavata and Bhagavad Gita. Part of the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, the ISKCON movement gained pace with the ever increasing number of centres established all across the world. There are over 400 centres worldwide and close to 120 in India alone. Started in New York City, the members of this movement follow the path of bhakti or complete devotion to please and reach the Supreme Lord, Krishna.

Swami Prabhupada feared that the essence of Krishna's teachings would be lost in his great mission of expanding the ISKCON wings so wide globally. However, the hard working member-devotees have been energetic and active preachers of the main teachings and supremacy of Lord Krishna. Several educational activities are conducted to the youth and the old alike. There have also been efforts to include 'Krishnology' in academia.

ISKCON Temples – A Source of Bliss

The main motto of ISKCON is to surrender at the lotus feet of the Lord and spread spiritual knowledge. The devotees of Lord Krishna hold on to the pillars of Dharma, namely, Mercy, Austerity, Truthfulness and Cleanliness. The devotees celebrate the joy of life by singing praises to Lord Krishna. They forget the material world and merge with the immaterial and the cosmic.

The Food for Life project undertaken by ISKCON is truly commendable. Swami Prabhupada had instructed his followers that no one within ten miles of the temple should go hungry. The distribution of food to most Government schools in India and other parts of the world draws thundering applause.

ISKCON temples in India or elsewhere receive hundreds of visitors everyday. The ISKCON temple in the metro cities are humongous and glorious. You can feel divinity at the very entrance of the temples as there's a constant chant of the Hare Krishna mantra. The festivities here are celebrated on a large scale. Visit the nearest ISKCON temple and experience the sublime. It is sure to make believers of all non-believers.
