A Tribute : India’s Magnificent Lord Shiva Statues

Known as ‘The Destroyer' in Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva is one of the foremost deities in India who is worshiped in many forms. Called as Mahadeva, Bholenath, Eshwara etc. Lord Shiva is also considered as the patron God for Yoga and Art forms. The Lord's serene expression, the serpent around his neck, the Trishul and the Damaru held by Him, all these when recreated in the form of creatively done idols, look spectacular.

As a land of temples, it is obvious the India has numerous temples that are dedicated to Lord Shiva. From the twelve Jyotirlingas to the swayambhu Shiva Lingas, India has proven its reverence to Lord Shiva. Along with the Shiva shrines, India is also home to some of the tallest Shiva statues which rest in a sitting position. Located behind the Kemp fort on Airport Road at Bangalore is an amazing Lord Shiva statue which is also a famous tourist attraction. This idol is 65 feet in height and is artistically built by giving attention to every detail. It was inaugurated on February 26th, 1995 and since then people from all over the country have been visiting this Shiva shrine.

Sitting in a meditating position, with his eyes closed, the Lord Shiva statue on the banks of River Ganga at Rishikesh is undoubtedly a marvellous sight. Situated at the Parmarth Niketan Ashram where the atmosphere proves to be serene and picturesque, this Shiva Idol is 14 feet in height and is a popular tourist attraction. A Ganga Aarti is offered to the Lord Shiva Statue here every evening.

Situated on the Arabian Coast of Karnataka, the Lord Shiva statue here is known to be the second tallest Shiva statue in the world. With a height of 123 feet, this majestic Lord Shiva idol is designed and placed in such as way that it is directly hit by the sun rays, thereby making it appear illuminated.

Another important Lord Shiva statue is seen at Kachnar City of Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh. Sitting at a height of 76 feet, this Lord Shiva Statue is definitely a worthy sight. Apart from the giant Lord Shiva statue, Kachnar City also houses other attractions such as replicas of the Jyotirlingas.

Renowned as one of the biggest statues of Lord Shiva in India, the Shiva idol at Bijapur is located at Shivapur on Sindagi Road and is a famous tourist spot. The Shiva Statue is 85 feet in height and 1,500 tonnes in weight. It is said that it took about 13 months to build this idol to perfection.

Namchi, Sikkim

With an astonishing height of 103 feet, this Lord Shiva statue is located at Siddheshwar Dhaam of Namchi in the state of Sikkim. While being a great attraction to the tourists, Siddheshwar Dhaam also has other sights to offer apart from the Shiva statue such as replicas of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the Char Dhams of the Hindus. Visitors can also enjoy the great view of Mount Kanchenjunga from here.
