Hidden hill stations of Uttarakhand

Everyone is familiar with the famous hill stations of Uttarakhand like Mussoorie, Almora and Dehradun but very few people would have heard of places like Pauri, Nuakuchiatal and Ranikhet. Home to history, heritage, religion and adventure sports, these lesser known hill stations in Uttarkhand are in no way inferior to their famous counterparts. So, visit the 'mini switzerland of India', Chopta or the 'Queens Meadow' of Ranikhet. Here is guide to the hidden hill stations of Uttarakhand.

Auli

Auli

Not really hidden but still unknown to many people, Auli is famous as a skiing destination and is a gateway to the sacred Badrinath and Kedarnath temples. It also boasts of Asia's highest cable car.

Dhanaulti

Dhanaulti

Every knows Mussorie but some may not know Dhanaulti. On the way from Chamba to Mussoorie, this picturesque hill station is famous for adventure sports and sightseeing spots alike.

Kalsi

Kalsi

Home to the famous Ashokan rock edict, which has the fourteenth edict of Emperor Ashoka inscribed on it, Kalsi is also the gateway to the Jaunsar- Bawar region tribal region and is situated at the meeting points of the rivers, Yamuna and Tons. Asan Barrage, a home for endangered birds, is another must see spot.

Landsdowne

Landsdowne

Not the usual tourist destination, it is as if this town was meant to preserve its quaint charm and appeal. A local army cantontment board manages and regulates the development of the town. Go here for a view of the Himalayas and be a part of the old world British charm with many British era bungalows preserved here.

Pauri

Pauri

Come to Pauri for mesmerising views of snow capped mountain ranges and hills. Pay your respects at famous temples like Kyunkaleshwar Mahadev temple and settle down for a picnic amidst its picture perfect locales. Angling and cycling are popular activities in Pauri and swimming can be enjoyed too in the Nayar river.

Naukuchiatal

Naukuchiatal

Also known as the lake village, the name means 'nine cornered lake' and it is believed that someone who can see all the nine corners at a glance attains 'nirvana' or is freed from the cycle of births and rebirths. Tourists can enjoy boating in Naukuchiatal Lake and paragliding in the surroundings of the lake. Bhimtal, known for lakes, is a prominent tourist destination located 4 km from here. Sattal, a group of seven interlinked lakes is also located at a distance of 6 km from Naukuchiatal.

Ranikhet

Ranikhet

Known as 'Queen's Meadow', mountain biking and trekking are the adventure sports that one can enjoy in Ranikhet. Do not miss out on Upat, which has a golf course and Rani jheel, a large artificial lake where you can enjoy boating. Other attractions of Ranikhet are Dwarahat, Bhalu Dam, Tarikhet, Kumaon Regiment Golf Course, Cantonment Aashiyana Park, sunset points and khoont. Sitalkhet, Kaurasi and Khairna are also worth visiting.

Chopta

Chopta

More famous as the starting point for treks to Tungnath and Chandrashila, Chopta has earned the name of 'mini switzerland' due to its scenic beauty and splendid views of the mountain ranges like Chaukhamba, Trishul and Nanda Devi. It is renowned for the Tungnath temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
