When a whole city is a hill station and is decked up with waterfalls, it is not difficult to find picnic spots. Lakes amidst the green slope hills are also nothing less than a refreshment. A morning or an evening on a lake bed watching the still water and listening to the chirping of birds is soothing for the ears and soul!

Umiam Lake

Umiam Lake needs no introduction! It is one the main shooting location of Airtel 4G Ad. The lake, also known as 'Bara Pani' is one of the famous lakes in Shillong. Don't you remember Airtel 4G Girl on the banks of a beautiful river and the folk dance by the tribes? This beautiful location is also a place for several water sports!

Timings: 9 AM - 5 PM
Place: Umiam Lake is around 16km from Police Bazaar.

Wards Lake

Once a Khasi prisoner requested for a change of scene; his wish was granted, Wards Lake was built. This horseshoe shaped lake is a picnicker's paradise in Shillong. Just below the Raj Bhavan (Governor's Residence), Wards Lake is amidst the bounty of nature. Colourful fishes, lush green vegetation and birds keep us engaged and relaxed!

Timings: 8.30AM - 5.30PM
Place: Wards Lake is 2km from Police Bazaar.

It is better to take a cab to both locations.

For a nature lover, these lakes are the best escapade from the bustle of the city. The water and greenery keep you calm and refreshing!

Best Time to Visit Shillong

March to June is the best time to visit Shillong as the weather is pleasant and helpful for tours.
