The tiny hill station of Barog, located in the Solan district of Himachal Pradesh, is one such charming place. Sitting cozily in the folds of the mountains, Barog is perched at an altitude of 1531 m above sea level and is one of the important stations on the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kalka-Shimla rail route.

The hill station is situated at a distance of about 54 km from Shimla and about 60 km from Chandigarh - the first planned city of India, which is also famous for its unique Rock Garden. Apart from the amazing weather, Barog offers its visitors with stunning views and a relaxed environment that is just right for a perfect summer holiday.

The specialty of Himachal is its pleasant weather. So even during the summers, Barog has a cool weather with temperatures ranging between 10-22 degree Celsius. During winters, the temperature drops to as low as 5 degree Celsius. Therefore, a visit to Barog can be enjoyed both during summer as well as winter.

The monsoon, however, is better avoided for travel in Himachal Pradesh in general, due to the heavy rains and sudden landslides. But of course, the adventurous ones will still venture out to experience the thrill of the monsoons amidst the mountains.

By Air: The nearest airports to reach Barog are Chandigarh and Shimla at a distance of approximately 70 km and 60 km, respectively. These airports are well connected with other major cities of India.

By Road: Regular buses shuttle between Barog and nearby cities and towns including Delhi, Chandigarh, Shimla, Solan, Chail and Kasauli.

By Rail: Arriving at Barog via rail is the best experience one can have. Reach Kalka from Delhi and book yourself a ticket on the Shimla-Kalka Himalayan Mountain Rail. Designed in a beautiful Scottish style of architecture, the Barog station is one of the major halts on this route, located at a distance of 34 km. Enjoy the scenic vistas as the toy train chugs through a serene landscape.

Choor Chandni Peak

Perched at an altitude of 3650 m above sea level, the Choor Chandni Peak near Barog is one of the famous tourist attractions. Surrounded by thick pine forests, a trek to the peak is one of the most beautiful ones.

The mountain is called Choordhar, as, artistically speaking, it appears like several silver bangles are sloping down the mountains on bright moonlit nights. The peak offers stunning views of the Sutlej river, valleys and plains, and a number of surrounding peaks.

Dagshai

Dagshai

About 10 km from Barog, is the oldest cantonment town of Dagshai that was founded by the East India Company in 1847. It has a lot of picnic spots and viewpoints to observe the surrounding mountains' peaks and ranges.

Those interested in stargazing can also indulge in camping and stargazing activities at night. There are an old church, a museum and a jail that can be visited to get a peek into the history and culture of the region.

About 7 km from Barog is another village called Jatoli, which is famous for a Shiva temple. If you are up for a short hike, you can walk up to the village. The walk is a pleasant one amidst a beautiful landscape. Or take a short drive on the Solan-Rajgarh road to reach the place.

Dolanji Bon Monastery

Located about 5 km from Barog, the Dolanji Bon Monastery was founded in 1969. It is an active centre for learning and understanding the Tibetan culture and tradition. It is also known as Yungdrung Bon Monastery. If you travelling to Barog during certain festivals and occasions, you may be able to see the traditional Bon dance that is performed by the resident monks at the monastery.

Apart from these, one can stroll leisurely around the numerous apple and apricot orchards strewn across the hills, or visit the Solan Brewery, Zoological Survey of India Museum, etc.
