Experiential Travel: 13-Year-old Sohan Raghuram Writes About His Unique Trip To Goa

By Lekhaka

Life is a daring adventure or nothing at all. I'm pretty sure you must have heard this quote by Helen Keller. For me it relates to experiential travelling where adventure, local cuisine, culture, cycling, hiking/trekking, photography, interaction with locals and learning new skills stands out to make it unique from any regular trip.

When we think about travel, it's obvious that the first thing that comes to our mind is travelling from point A to B, staying in decent property, taking pictures at tourist spots, etc. But hey! Wouldn't it be fun if we could blend passion and hobbies into travel?

One of my travel experiences in December 2020 was a weeklong road trip mixed with cycling to Goa. My family and I drove in our car from Bangalore to Dandeli (Karnataka) with cycles on the car rack. We started cycling from Bhagwati and finished in Cavelossim covering 251 km.

The cycling we did everyday felt like heaven. There were trees lined on both sides of the road, forming a canopy, and the sounds of the birds was so distinct and peaceful. Cycling was mostly a half-day activity with some rest and spare time to explore the properties we stayed in and its surroundings and filled with activities like bird-watching, island-hopping, etc.

With the help of Unventured (https://unventured.com), this trip was exclusively curated and made to ensure we were always experiencing something different than the usual Goa and its beaches.

En route cycling to Molem, we crossed a beautiful stream that instantly became our picnic spot for lunch, which could have been missed if we were just driving past. The next morning in Molem, we went bird-watching and it was the first time that in just a matter of an hour, we managed to spot and photograph more than 25 species!

Truly an exhilarating experience it was to explore places on a bicycle, weaving stories and a whole new feel to travel that nobody would have thought of!

It's fascinating to sit back and absorb on how travel can be more than just flying to your destination and staying at hotels but rather adding the things you love as a way to experience different places and cultures.

My next destination would be Himachal Pradesh (the Himalayas), other parts in India and Europe post-pandemic, where I can make them unique in every which way I would want to explore.
