A tour around some popular and exotic temples in Tamil Nadu is an interesting one.

The moment we think about the state, temples are one of the first things which appear. Tamil Nadu has had a rich past and culture; these temples remind us of it.

Some popular tourist places like Ooty, Kodaikanal, Kanyakumari, etc. are also well known in the country. Among them the pilgrim sites also contribute to Tamil Nadu tourism.

So, let us make a virtual tour around some of the largest and exotic temples in Tamil Nadu!

Brihadeshwara Temple

Brihadeshwara Temple

Brihadeshwara Temple in Thanjavur is more than 1000 years old. This heritage site is one among the 3 UNESCO World Heritage sites under ' Great Living Chola Temples'. The other two temples in the category are Brihadeeswarar Temple (Gangaikonda Chola Puram) and Airvatesvara Temple.


This ancient architecture is one of the largest temples in India and Tamil Nadu.

Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple

Rameshwaram is a famous holy place in South India. Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple (Shiva temple) here is one of the 12 jyothirlinga temples.

The main deity is Shiva in Lingam form. There are other two Lingams inside the sanctorium: One made by sand by Goddess Sita and one brought by Lord Hanuman from Mt.Kailash. The believe is according the mythology of Ramayana.

It is surely one of the exotic temples in Tamil Nadu!

In the heart of the ancient city of Madurai, Meenakshi Amman Temple stands with its exotic and enchanting architecture.

Meenakshi Amman Temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva. Tall Gopurams (temple towers) along with a huge temple complex is one of the most prominent tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu.

Annamalaiyar Temple in Thirvannamalai is a Shiva Temple. The temple complex of this temple is one of the largest in India.

The complex has many temples, among them Annamalaiyar and Unnumalai Amman (Parvati temple) are the bigger ones. Located on the Annamalai hills, it is one of the most popular temples of Tamil Nadu.

Kamakshi Temple

Kamakshi Temple was built by Pallava kings in 6 C.E. The temple is one of the famous ones in Kanchipuram.

Kamakshi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati and is one of the popular Parvati temples in Tamil Nadu.

Sripuram Temple is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi. It is located in Vellore.

Sripuram Temple is coated with Gold and thus makes it one of the most exotic temples in Tamil Nadu.

Kapaleeswarar Temple in Mylapore is famous one. Legends say that, here Shiva Lingam was worshipped in the form of a peacock. Hence, the city also got the name Mylapore.

Thanumalayan Temple

Thanumalayan Temple

Thanumalayan Temple is located in the temple town of Suchindram. The speciality here is that all 3: Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma are worshipped. Hence, it is also called as Sthanumalayan Temple.

Suchidram in Kanyakumari district is famous for Thanumalayan Temple.The intricate carvings on the gopuram and the temple complex makes it a picturesque place.

Shore Temple is an ancient temple in Mahabalipuram. Though it is not a big temple compared to others, it is definitely exotic and unique.

The intricate design was built in granite stones and it is one of the oldest rock-cut stone temples. The architectural style of this temple itself is exotic and worth visiting.

Jambukeswarar Temple

1,800 years old Jambukeswarar temple is situated in Tiruchirapalli. It is also called as Thiruvanikal or Thirvanaikaval.

This temple is one of the 5 major Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu.

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple (Srirangam)

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is the biggest temple in this temple complex of Srirangam.

The main deity worshipped here is Lord Vishnu. The Srirangam temple is considered as the world's biggest functioning temple.
