Built by Sher Shah Suri during the reign of the Mughal Empire, Khooni Darwaza is one of the few gates in India which is constructed in the Mughal-Afghan architectural style. Since the last few centuries, it has been standing strong, showcasing its survival and existence through the darkest and brightest times of the Mughal and British eras. It is believed that this building was named Khooni Darwaza by the general public after three princes of the Mughal dynasty were killed by the British Army at this place.

Today, it is just a spot for people who love to explore the history of a place. Even though it has been closed to the public since the incident of rape inside the building, you can still get a special permit to enter the building and search for its history around the corners.

There are several legends and stories revolving around this presumed haunted place and definite historical building. Apart from the story of three princes of the Mughal dynasty being killed here, it is also said that Aurangzeb displayed the head of his elder brother at this building after killing him in a fight for the throne.

According to stories, it is also believed that Jehangir, the son of Akbar, after occupying the throne, ordered his men to kill the sons of Abdul Rahim Khan-I-Khana, who was one amongst the Navaratnas in Akbar's court, as they were against him becoming the ruler of the Mughals.

This is also the spot where several fights happened during the struggle for independence of India. After all this bloodshed, the name of this building has become Khooni Darwaza.
