Chattisgarh Tourism – The Historical Town of Surguja

On the northern part of Chattisgarh along the border of Uttar Pradesh lies the small hamlet of Surguja, which is mostly covered with forests.

These lands are inhabited by many tribes who have their roots here since a long time. It is known for its ruins, temples and wildlife.

Although Surguja is a small place, its few attractions manage to draw travellers from far and wide. It is also a perfect getaway for those who wish to relax and rejuvenate far from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Deepadih

Deepadih

The small town of Deeadih is said to have its name mentioned in both the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. The town is famous for its Shankar temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Surrounding the temple are other smaller shrines dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Lord Kartikeya, Lord Ganesh and Goddess Durga. There are also many ruins of other temples found here that are believed to have been built during the Dravidian rule.

Semarsot Wildlife Sanctuary

The Semarsot Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the Ramgarh Hills. The Sanctuary is known to house animals like the Nilgai, Chital, Sambar, Chinkara, Wild boar, Fox, Jungle Cat, etc. It is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts who come here to catch a glimpse of these animals in their natural habitat.

The village of Ambikapur was once a princely state. The village gets its name from the Goddess Ambika, or Devi Mahamaya whose temple stands here. This scenic place has many escapades where tourists can explore the beauty of the region. It is a perfect place for those who love to explore and trek.

Deogarh

Deogarh

The village of Deogarh has a temple dedicated to Baba Bholenath or Lord Shiva as he is better known. During the festival of Shivratri the town is crowded with devotees who come from far and wide to celebrate the occasion. There is a fair held locally, and you can purchase trinkets and other items here. There is a river close to the temple where devotees take a dip. It is believed that this river is blessed by the lord.

Tamor Pingla Wildlife Sanctuary

Tamor Pingla Wildlife Sanctuary

The Tamor Pingla Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Surguja and Uttar Pradesh border and derives its name from the Tamor Hill and Pingla Nalla respectively. It is known to house many animals like tigers, leopards, bears, Sambar, Blue Bull, Chital and bison here. You can also see a variety of birds and reptiles in this sanctuary. It is a perfect place to head to with your family if you are looking for an adventure outing.

How to Reach Surguja

How to Reach Surguja

By Air: Surguja is 375 km from Raipur Airport, which is the nearest airport. Flights to major cities are available from here.

By Train: Surguja has its own railhead, and it is well-connected within the state of Chattisgarh, Delhi and Bihar

By Road: Buses are readily available from Durg, Bilaspur and Raipur. Private taxi or car service can also transport you to various tourist spots of Surguja.
