Chandra Taal, or the 'Lake of the Moon', is definitely a place to explore, a journey to unwind. This lake is one of the two lakes that you come across when you travel from Manali to Spiti. The other lake is Suraj Tal Lake. Chandra Taal gets its name from its crescent shape that resembles a crescent moon.
Situated at an altitude of around 4300m above sea level, the lake has to reached by trekking up. The place is popular among trekkers and campers alike. It is one of the high altitude lakes in the Himalayas. The Chandra Taal Baralacha Trek is one of the best treks the place has to offer.
Located amidst the Peerpanjal mountain range, a speciality of the lake is that it appears blue during the day, and turns to a greenish hue towards the evening. This is a true delight to watch!
Legends Associated to Chandra Taal
Chandra Taal is not just known for its scenic beauty and adventure, it also has its mentions in Hindu mythology. It is believed that it is from this lake that Lord Indra's chariot took Yudhishtira, the eldest Pandava, to heaven. Thus, the lake is significant among Hindus and is considered a pious place.
