History of Brahmeshwara Temple

The Brahmeshwara Temple is said to be a 12th century architecture. The shrine which belongs to the early Hoysala Period was commissioned by a rich lady named Bommare Nayakiti in 1171 AD. Hence, it is one of the oldest temple architectures in Karnataka.

In fact, the design of Brahmeshwara Temple is unique. Unlike other Hoysala Temples, this structure is constructed without a foundation. Actually, it is a Ekakuta (single shrine) architecture.

The Brahmeshwara Temple has an inner sanctum (garba gruha), the vestibule (antarala), a navaranga (main hall) and a Nandi Mantapa. The inner sanctum houses Lord Shiva who is worshipped as Lord Brahmeshwara.

Most interesting attractions of the temple are the sculptures. Yes, the Madanika figures (angelic beauities) can be seen on the walls and pillars of the temple. It is the detailing which amazes the visitors.

Several other carvings depicting the Hindu mythologies can also be seen on the outer walls of the temple. The Brahmeshwara Temple also has a Shikhara (Gopura) with exotic designs and mythological figures.

Hence, the temple complex looks astonishingly symmetrical and enchanting. Every architectural element is so intricate that it is fascinating to know.

Location of Brahmeshwara Temple

Brahmeshwara Temple is located in the town of Kikkeri in Mandhya District. Interestingly, the famous Shravanabelagola is around 13km from Kikkeri.

Shravanabelagola (13km), Srirangapatna (52km), Ranganatittu (56km) and Mysore (72km) are some of the prominent tourist places to visit near Kikkeri.

Shravanabelagola is one of the top tourist attractions in Karnataka. The monolithic idol of Gomateshwara is a landmark structure. So, tourists can visit Shravanabelagola and also cover Kikkeri Brahmeshwara Temple together.

The Brahmeshwara Temple in Kikkeri is not very famous but it has all the features of any other popular destination. In fact, it is a monument protected under the management of Archaeological Survey of India.
