Not all tourist place would be crowded and lively, some are also for spiritual awakening and uplift. One such attraction in West Bengal is the Belur Math, which was founded by Swami Vivekananda. Let us take a virtual tour of this unique attraction.
Located on the Western banks of river Hooghly, Belur Math is a pilgrimage centre that caters to devotees of all religious faiths. People from across the world visit this place to find peace, even if they don't belong to any religion.
Represented as a 'Symphony in Architecture', Belur Math is one of the architectural wonders of the world that professes universal faith. Swami Vivekananda, who was an ardent devotee of Sri Ramakrishna, built this organisation inspired by his Guru's teachings.
Spread across 40 acres of land, the Math campus includes temples that are dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna, Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda. It is said that Swami Vivekananda and his fellow brothers set out on a journey to the pilgrim sites across the nation, and got inspired to build an institution to promote Sri Ramakrishna's teachings. This institution is also architecturally inspired by several religious centres spread across India.

Soon after this trip, Swami left for the West to attend a conference, where he further got inspired by some of the European architectural marvels, and started working on his mission once he got back to India. The foundation stone of the Math was laid on 16th May 1935, and the structure was built under Swami's guidance, incorporating the features and symbols of all religions across the world, into a single structure. This is something unique to the organisation.
The main entrance of the structure is influenced by the temples of South India, with a Buddhist tint to it. The main temple's central dome has a European architectural style, and the floor of the temple has the shape of the Holy Cross.

The other umbrella shaped domes were influenced by a village in Bengal and the exterior walls of the structure is built using Ajanta style of architecture. Similarly, each part of the Math has the designs and srchitectural styles adopted by the structures from the world. This is one of the places you shouldn't miss on your trip to Belur in West Bengal
