The summers in India are relatively very hot compared to any other place in Asia, with harsh hot days and humid nights. However, Bengaluru is an exception to this kind of a weather, which comparatively is more pleasant, but again, the garden city is falling prey to rapid urbanization, which in turns contributes to the hot mornings of the city.

And it is not surprising that when it rains, it is welcomed by all. The rain helps the city cool down and fill up the waterfalls to their full capacity. A lot of summer-exhausted people try to make it a point to make time and head towards the various waterfalls in the neighbouring regions and take in all the beauty of the breathtaking sight of the vast waters hitting the ground from immense heights.

1. Unchalli

1. Unchalli

Around 400 km from Bengaluru, in Uttara Kannada, are the Unchalli or Lushington falls. These falls were discovered by J.D. Lushington in 1845 who was a district collector under the British Government. The Aghanashini River forms this speculator waterfall, which makes its way from a breathtaking height of almost 400 feet.

It is also known as Mini Niagara for the amount of noise it makes whilst gushing down. A trek of 5 km from the village of Heggarne through dense forests, steep mountain slopes, deep gorges and amazing flora would make it an unforgettable experience.

2. Shivanasamudra

2. Shivanasamudra

At a distance of 135 km from the city, on the banks of river Kaveri, is this waterfall which comprises of the multi-segmented waterfall descending rapidly over a cliff. As the Kaveri makes its way through the rocky terrain of the Deccan Plateau, it falls off to take the formation of the Shivanasamudra Falls.

The town is also known for its group of old temples and being an island, it divides Kaveri into two waterfalls, Barachukki and Gaganchukki. It is also home to the first Hydro-electric power station in Asia.

3. Sirimane

3. Sirimane

Around 300 km from the city, in the district of Chikmagalur is the Sirimane Falls. With its close proximity to the temple town of Sringeri, the waterfall is fed by the streams which flow out through the coffee estates.

A flight of stairs take you down to the base, where you could have a cool shower under the fall.

4. Shivaganga

Shrouded with thick forests, flowing down in this breathtaking background are the Shivaganga falls. The waterfall is formed by the river Sonda, which flows down from a height of 240 feet. It is seen as a very unique waterfalls in the western ghats.

There are stairs which take you to the various viewpoints of the falls, and some go through a dirt trail and take you all the way down. If you like to take a jungle trek, then it is a must visit.

At the foothills of the Pushpagiri range falling from a cliff are the Mallalli falls, which are formed by the Kumaradhara River. At a distance of 25 km from Somwarpet, the Kumaradhara River forms the falls and flows towards the famous Kukke Subramanya Temple and later joins on to the Nethravathi River and then to the Arabian Sea.

6. Jog

At a distance of 100 kilometers from the town of Shimoga, is the famous waterfall of Jog. The fall is the formation of the river Sharavathi, which hits the ground from a height of 250 metres. The Jog is a combination of four waterfalls namely Raja, Rani, Rocket and Roarer. One can attempt an adventurous feat here by taking 1400 steep steps that would take you to the base.

Located in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in Coorg district and sharing its borders with Wayanad District in Kerala are the Iruppu falls. Formed in the Brahmagiri Range, the Iruppu falls are formed by the river Lakshmana Teertha from a height of 170 feet. Also known as Lakshmana Tirtha falls, this fresh water fall is a major attraction.

It is also seen as a pilgrimage spot because of a legend which says that Lakshmana shot an arrow into to the Brahmagiri hills and made way for the river to flow down to the stream.

At a distance of 80 km from Karwar, the river Bedti falls from a height of 200 meters and leads to the formation of Magod falls amidst dense forests. With a magnificent view of the water cascade, enroute to the fall, you will find a large lake called the Kavade Kere.

9. Arshinagudi

9. Arshinagudi

One of the breathtaking falls in the Western Ghats, hidden inside the jungle of Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary near Kollur, are the Arshinagudi falls. The name translates itself to "lake of turmeric" and the water here is said to have medicinal properties.

Inside the greenery and wilderness, the falls offer you a spectacular view. In the surrounding areas, one cannot find any form of civilization, which makes it even more peaceful to enjoy the beauty of the falls.

10. Hebbe

10. Hebbe

The beautiful waterfall is situated in the middle of coffee estates in the famous town of Kemmanagundi. The fall gushes down from a height of 168 metres in two stages, which form the Dodda Hebbe and Chikka Hebbe.

Exploring this waterfall and splashing in the refreshing and cool stream offers a chilling experience to all those who come to visit it.
