India was once fondly called the golden sparrow, simply due to its pantheon of endless royalty. The heritage of the place has passed on from one generation to another; however, the glorious past of the country is visible today only in the grand palaces and other structures which the royalty have left behind. While many of these palaces are still the official residence to the present generation there are few which are preserved as monuments of a bygone era.

When it comes to palaces and royalty, the first place which comes running to our minds is Rajasthan, which is one amongst the most well-preserved, princely states and is home to a large number of well-designed palaces. Well, beautiful palaces are not just in Rajasthan; there are several others which are found in various parts of the country. Have a look at some of them and revisit their glorious past.

Padmanabhapuram Palace

Situated at the foot of the Veli Hill, the palace is blessed with breathtaking views of the Western Ghats. This grand palace was first built in the year 1601 by Iravi Varma Kulasekhara Perumal and was later renovated by Marthanda Varma in 1750.

Although, with the passage of time, most of its glory has been lost; however, one can get a glimpse of its luxurious past in its architecture, especially the council room, which is considered as a hallmark of traditional Kerala architecture.

The royal palace looks over Leh city and was built by King Sengge Namgyal in the 17th century on the lines of the Potala Palace in Lhasa.The nine-storey structure located in the Himalayan desert maintained its glory until the Dogra forces took over Ladakh in the 19th century.

After being abandoned by the members of the royal family, the palace fell into ruins, but was revived into its past glory by the Archaeological Survey of India.

One would come across a vast collection of rare ornaments, ceremonial dresses and many artefacts which are over 450 years old.

The official residence of the Nizams, the palace was constructed from 1750 to 1857 on a total area of 45 acres and holds four structures within its complex. It was built on the lines of Shah of Iran’s palace in Tehran along with a unique style and design which reflects its undying elegance.

Cooch Behar

Built on the lines of the Buckingham Palace, Cooch Behar is well known for its grandeur and beauty. The two-storeyed structure showcases a western style of architectural design and arcaded verandas, which lead to a projected porch entrance of the Durbar Hall.

The palace was built in the year 1887 as a tribute to the reign of Maharaja Nripendra Narayana of the Mantri royal family.

One amongst the grand constructions of the Maratha family, which ruled the Baroda state, Lakshmi Vilas Palace is part of the grand Maharaja Palace complex, which was built in the Indo-Saracenic architectural style.

The palace is four times the size of the Buckingham Palace and is considered as the world’s largest private residence as it continues to be the home of the royal family.
