Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh, represents the rich heritage and culture of the state. Historically, Lucknow was the focal point of the 1857 War of Independence. The city is known for clothes of chikan and zardozi embroidery, as well as their utterly delicious kebabs and biryani.

Such a culturally rich city has been holding the Lucknow Mahotsav that has been taking place for decades, which began as an attempt to promote tourism by the government. Now, Lucknow Mahotsav is one of the most awaited festivals in Uttar Pradesh that usually takes place towards the end of November.

It is a 10-day-long boisterous festival that will be taking place between 25th November to 5th December this year. In this extravagant festival, you can witness the art and culture of the state, which is called "Thzeeb" in Lakhnavi. The festival has been taking place from 1976, more or less every year.

Events Of The Lucknow Mahotsav

Locals showcase all traditional art, such as plays, ghazals, artists playing the sitar, perform Kathak and have Qawali nights. They also have traditional village games, Mushaira performances, Thumri nights and many competitions to keep the crowd engaged.

Some of the competitions held during Lucknow Mahotsav include kite flying, drama competitions, vintage car rallies, boat races and another interesting sports, like cock fighting. The whole city of Lucknow gathers to put on the best show while having a gala time.

The festival is attended even by big movie stars. Look out for stalls with traditional handicrafts and artwork, a crafts fair that is brought together from 20 different regions.

This land of Nawabs has been passing on their influence through generations in the form of food! Lucknow is famous for the lip-smacking Nawabi cuisine that will make you fall in love with food, even if you aren't a foodie!

Needless to say, the mahotsav will be filled with stalls of food of every kind and is definitely a food lover's haven. Try the variety of dishes, such as the non-vegetarian dishes, kebabs, parathas and the savoury kesariya doodh.

Bara Imambara

Constructed by Asaf-ud-Daula, Bara Imambara is a famous congregation hall for Shia Muslims, a shrine that was built for their Azadari or Mourning of Muharram. It is built in a classic Mughal architecture and the mosque, which is the Badshahi Mosque, is one of the final structures that had no additions of European elements such as iron.

Ambedkar Memorial Park

Ambedkar Park is a memorial that was built by Mayawati, the CM of Uttar Pradesh, in 1995. This mesmerising park was built using red sandstone that was brought in all the way from Rajasthan.

The view of this public park during the night is simply stunning since they light up the memorial in the darkness. Few Bollywood movie like Youngistaan and Daawat-e-Ishq have been shot here at the park.

Lucknow Zoo

The Lucknow Zoo, formerly known as Nawab Wazid Ali Shah Prani Udyan, is located in the heart of the city and was built in order to mark the visit of the Prince of Wales to Lucknow. The zoo is home to innumerable animals and birds, such as white Bengal tiger, Himalayan black bear, hog deer, etc.

The zoo also has a toy train that was established in 1969. It went out of service after a couple of decades but now has been replaced by a revamped toy train that looks like the Shatabdi Express, which takes you around the zoo.
