Best Time To Trek Dzukou Valley

The best time to visit or trek is between the pleasant months of June to September. During this time, the valley will have fully blossomed flowers adorning the hills, making the trekking experience all the more blissful.

Things To Carry For The Trek

Pack lunch since there aren't any stalls or hotels nearby, sunscreen and sunglasses, water bottles, medical kit (in case of an emergency), good quality shoes and comfortable clothes.

Let The Trek Begin!

The trek to the top of Dzukou Valley is relatively easy and can be completed within a day, so it is a great place to start for beginners. Viswema village, located 22 km from the city centre of Kohima, is the starting point of the trek. The hike might be easier if you appoint a local guide.

The initial part of the trek is perhaps the toughest. This is due to the vertically laid steps on which one has to climb. These steps are roughly laid stones, covered with moss and algae and extends for over 1 km. This stretch of trail is surrounded by breathtaking silver fern trees, low scrubs of bamboo and thickets of tropical forests.

The change in altitude might be challenging to people with respiratory problems. Such people can trek slow and steadily with a lot of breaks. The first bit might take about an hour, depending on the number of breaks you take.

You will reach the top of the valley at this end of this gruelling vertical climb. The panoramic view of the entire valley is spellbinding to say the least, and will certainly do justice to the climb! The view of virgin emerald green meadows stretching infinitely on all the directions, with pink and white lilies dotted everywhere will rid you of all your worries!

Once you are done consuming the magnificent valley and resting for some time, head to the rest house or the trek base, located at a distance of around 5 km. This section of the trek is relatively easy since you mostly have to walk through the meadows.

After 2-3 hours of hiking, you will reach a rest house, where you may choose to stay the night if you want to extend your stay at this tranquil heart of nature. However, if you do so, make sure to carry food items to cook on your own since the place is only a rest house and does not have a hotel. If you opt to return, you may finish your packed lunch here before heading back to the Viswema village.
