An Inviting Trip Through Belgaum!

Belgaum or Belgavi as it is called in Kannada, is placed to the North-West of Karnataka State bordering Maharasthra and Goa. What makes a trip to Belgaum inviting is its pleasant weather. Tagged the second capital city of Karnataka, Belgaum houses a state administrative building called Suvarna Vidhana Soudha. Its rapid developmental projects have paved way to an increase in tourist activities.

It takes approximately 7 hours to cover the stretch of 505 km from Bangalore to Belgaum. The Bangalore-Pune Highway or the NH4 needs to be accessed to reach the historic place of Belgaum. Mahatma Gandhiji visited Belgaum during the 1924 December session of the Indian National Congress.

Also called Halshi, Halasi is in Belgaum's Khanapura Taluk. Situated to the South-East of Khanapura railway station, Halasi was once the capital of the Kadamba dynasty and boasts of its architectural beauty in the form of a Lakshmi Narasimha Temple. There are 2 sanctum sanctorums facing each other. The one to the right has the idol of Lord Vishnu with Lakshmi and Suryanaryana behind Him. The one to the left has Lord Varaha's idol. Lord Narasimha is said to have self-manifested and is spotted next to Vishnu's idol.

Saundatti, locally called Savudatti, is a famous pilgrim centre of Belgaum. It is also called yellammagudda in honour of Goddess Yellamma whose temple receives plenty of visitors. Saundatti was the capital of the Ratta Kings. In the 18th century, Sarasangi Desai built a fort here with a temple and many beautiful geometrical carvings!

A Yogi named Sri Kumaraswamy is said to have attained liberation at this very place in Belgaum. Naviltirtha is located close to Saundatti on the Renuka Lake formed by Malaprabha River.

Sogal is located only 26 km from Naviltirtha and is of great antiquarian interest. With inscription and folklores explaining the land's history, one will be drowned in the beauty of it all. Said to be the former abode of a sage called Sugola and the place where the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Parvati took place, Sogal is famous for its waterfalls.
