India is a country which is filled with many beautiful and appealing historical sites. These historical sites can be seen as one of the major reasons, apart from the natural beauty, which makes tourism very popular here. All the historical places in the country have their own share of stories to narrate and a walk through many of them is truly an experience which would prove to be life-changing.
Historical places and beautiful monuments have no dearth across India and are truly a source of delight for any traveller. While monuments like the Taj Mahal, Qutub Minar, forts of Rajasthan along with the Golden Temple are intensely studied, there are quite a number of others with very little information to avail. These lesser-known destinations would truly enthral you in every aspect and would grab your attention.
Talatal Ghar

One of the well-preserved remnants, which showcase the Tai Ahom architecture, is the 17th-century Talatal Ghar, built by Swargadeo Rudra Singha, who was considered as the most powerful ruler of the Ahom kingdom.
Located about 60 km away from the town of Jorhat is Rangpur; the structure was initially built as an army base which stands tall as proof of the power of Ahom kingdom.
Osian

There are way too many temples, forts and palaces in the state of Rajasthan, which cater to a history-seeking traveller in Rajasthan. However, Osian, on the contrary, is as refreshing as finding an oasis in a desert. This small village, built around an oasis in the Thar Desert, is often missed between the majestic sand dunes and monuments of Jodhpur.
The hamlet is home to not just one or two temples but 16 beautifully decorated Buddhist and Jain shrines which were built between the 8th and 12th centuries.
Amongst the lot, the most popular ones are Sachiya Mata Temple, Sun Temple and Mahaveera Jain Temple, which are truly sights to behold with ornate pillars and walls filled with sculptures that resemble the ones at Khajuraho.
Shettihalli Church

Karnataka is a state which is rich in history and filled with historical places. Amidst palaces and temples is a 200-year-old Gothic structure, situated on the banks of the river Hemavathi, which is slowly making its way to the tourist circuit of a curious traveller.
The dam at the river submerges the monument every monsoon and the church appears again only when the water resides in the summer.
Constructed by the French missionaries sometime in the late 1800s, this place is must visit due to its vulnerability. As the water engulfs the structure year after year, the monument suffers damages or loses some bits of itself; hence, the sooner you go the better it is.
Cellular Jail

Between 1857 and 1943, countless political prisoners and revolutionaries of India's freedom struggle against the British were housed in the solitary cells of the Cellular Jail in Port Blair.
Also known as Kalapani, the structure was converted into a museum after independence and remains one of the most agonising relics of India's colonial past. A beautiful light and sound show narrates the horrifying stories of the prisoners who lived their lives in confinement here.
Vikramshila University

Many people go unaware that India had many excellent educational institutions in the past, one amongst them is the Vikramshila University, which is located 50 km away from Bhagalpur.
The university was one of the largest Buddhist learning centres which is spread over a large space of land. The place has 52 rooms spread across both sides of the corridor and has a grand stupa at the centre. An enormous library had been excavated from this site which further testifies to the rich and vast history of India.
Amarkantak

Standing tall amidst a forest close to the confluence of the Vindhya and Satpura ranges, this temple complex showcases a very different display of geometric architectural example which dates back to the 11th century.
Apart from this, the geographic setting gives out an enigmatic charm to the surreal temples and carvings, which includes the Sri Yantra Maha Meru Temple which showcases four facades that symbolises Goddess Tripura Sundari.
