Alluring Temples of Mangalore!

Mangalore, the chief port city of Karnataka also boasts some of the most alluring temples in the state. The culture, history and mention of Mangalore in several scriptures attract several tourists round the year. It is said that Mangalore was ruled by Lord Rama himself during the time and age of the Epic Ramayana. Also, during the times of Mahabharata, the youngest of the Pandavas - Sahadeva reigned over the land. Lying on the backwaters of rivers Netravati and Gurupura, Mangalore is famous for its beaches and temples.

Mangaladevi Temple

Mangalore is named after Goddess Mangaladevi, the residing deity of the Mangaladevi temple. The temple is located in Bolara, Mangalore. The pious from all over South flock the temple seeking happiness and prosperity. Devotees wait to marry in the vicinity of the temple for a better future. The temple is easily accessible by road and rail with the city railway station situated only 3 km away. During Navratri, the temple is a spectacle!

Gokarnatheshwara Temple

Kudroli Gokarnatheshwara Temple

The Gokarnatheshwara temple at Kudroli is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Consecrated by Narayana Guru, a sage-social reformer, the Gokarnatheshwara temple symbolizes the breaking down of rigidity in the caste system. There are not only women priests in the temple, there have also been priestly rituals performed by widows in the recent past. As per Narayana Guru's directions, idols of Ganesh, Subramanya, Annapoorneshwari, Bhairava, Shanishwara and Lord Krishna are installed in the temple premises. There are also idols of Sharada Mata, and Nava Griha (lords of nine planets). The temple also boasts of life-size idols of Nava Durgas which are worshipped especially during Navratri.

Kadri Manjunatha Temple

The Manjunatha temple at Kadri is regarded to have a Buddhist past and Hindu present. With the fall of Buddhism, the deity is said to have been converted into Lord Manjunatha. The reliefs found in the temple are closely associated with Vajrayana cult of Buddhism. The idol worshipped in the temple is considered one of the best bronze idols in the country. There is also a temple tank known as Gomukha where the devotees take a dip before entering the temple.
