All About The Beautiful Town Of Kalpetta

Right from the lofty mountains of the Western Ghats to the brackish backwaters, Kerala is a land full of breathtaking vistas of nature. In such a beautiful land, lies one picturesque town called Kalpetta, in the Wayanad district. It is the headquarters of Wayanad, perched at an altitude of 2560 ft. The town is located 13 km from Wayanad and 73 km from Kozhikode and is found on the Kozhikode-Mysore National Highway, that is, NH 766.

Since the town is surrounded completely by tea and coffee plantations, the dreamy aroma of the same enhances your visit to the town. Along with the backdrop of the magnanimous Western Ghats, Kalpetta makes for a great romantic destination.

The name Kalpetta is believed to be derived from Kannada, by early Jain residents. It literally translates to "deposits of stones", since the whole town is spread with rocks and stones of all sizes.

Kanthanpara Waterfalls

Since most of the limelight perpetually falls on Wayanad, tourists might have overlooked some of the places to visit in Kalpetta. Kanthanpara Waterfalls is one such location, that falls right between two estates. The falls cascades through rocky terrains and falls from a short height of about 100 ft.

Since it is relatively a small cascade, Kanthanpara Waterfalls makes for a perfect picnic spot in Kalpetta.

Karapuzha Dam

Being one of India's largest earthen dam, the Karapuzha Dam in Kalpetta is another picturesque place to spend an evening at. The dam is almost 158 ft deep and is surrounded by beautiful lush greenery. The Karapuzha Dam is fed by the river Karapuzha, which is a tributary of the river Kabini.

The whole setting of the dam acts as a breeding ground for aquatic creatures. It is located 8 km from the main town of Kalpetta.

Meenmutty Waterfalls

Located about 30 km from the main town of Kalpetta, Meenmutty Waterfalls is a sought after attraction in Wayanad district. Falling from a height of 985 ft, it is a three-tiered waterfall. With beautiful lush forest surrounding the falls, Meenmutty waterfall is certainly a must visit in Wayanad.

To reach the falls, a small trek of about 2-3 km has to be made across rocky terrain. The best time to visit the falls would be between the months of November to May when the falls is rain-fed and gushing at top speed.

However, it is best to be careful during this season since quite a few accidents have occurred in the spot. The falls remains open from 8 am to 5 pm for tourists to visit with no entry fee.

How To Reach Kalpetta

By Air: At a distance of 84 km, the Calicut International Airport lies in Kozhikode, which is the closest airbase to the town. It is well connected to major cities of India like Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore, etc.

By Rail: Kozhikode railway station is the closest railhead to Kalpetta. It is located 72 km from the town and is well connected to numerous places like Hyderabad, Mangalore, Pondicherry, etc.

By Road: Since Kalpetta comes right on the NH 766, it is easily connected by good roads to many neighbouring cities and states. Regular state government-run buses are also available to Kalpetta from different parts of Kerala.
