Port Blair is the capital city of the beautiful Andaman and Nicobar Islands, located in the Bay of Bengal. Flanked by palm trees and azure waters of the beaches, Port Blair is the gateway to this heavenly territory. With 90% of tropical rainforests and natural beauty everywhere, Port Blair serves as the perfect holiday destination for nature lovers.
Andaman and Nicobar is supposed to be derived from a wordplay of Hanuman since it is believed that the mythological character Hanuman stopped here while rescuing Sita. Port Blair is home to the infamous Cellular Jail, the place where freedom fighters of India were imprisoned before independence.
Best Time To Visit Port Blair
Since the climate here is mostly tropical, October to March are the best months to visit the city of Port Blair. Monsoon months can be avoided, however trip packages are usually at a discount during this season.
How To Reach Port Blair
By Air: Veer Savarkar International Airport located in Port Blair, is the only airport in Andaman and Nicobar. Flights from cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata are available to reach here. It is approximately a 2-hour journey to Port Blair through a flight.
By Water: The three ports in India, located in Kolkata, Vishakapatnam and Chennai, are the ports from where cruise ships to Andaman and Nicobar are available. It takes about 2-3 days to journey through the water. January, February, March, April and November are the months when one could suffer very nominal sea sickness.

CellularJail
Cellular Jail or Kala Pani is the most popular monument visited in Port Blair. The structure is of national importance due to the history associated with it. It was the place of imprisonment of many freedom fighters who fought for the independence of India from the Britishers.
This national memorial holds a light and sound show, which narrates the tales of all the injustice and violence faced by the freedom fighters. The show is held every day at 6 pm and 7.15 pm. The narration is in Hindi on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and in English on the rest of the days.

Corbyn's Cove
Relax and have a laid back time at the Corbyn's Cove, an undisturbed beach lined with golden sand and coconut trees. It is located about 8 km from the main town and is the perfect break you need on your vacation. It is an ideal location to sunbathe, swim or even build sand forts!
You can enjoy by playing some water activities such as surfing, boating or scuba diving. A nearby island called the Snake Island can be visited where you might get to see beautiful and vibrant corals!

Chidiya Tapu
Take an afternoon drive to the beach of Chidiya Tapu, a one-hour drive to the bird island of Port Blair. Here you get to see beautiful bird variants and also the sun setting quietly since it is a popular sunset view point. You will drive through picturesque hills and forest area.
Trekking can be done here as well. The trail begins from the shores of Chidiya Tapu which goes through a dense tropical forest, to finally reach the Munda Pahad or the Black Mountain. You might want to pack food if you go on this trek since there will be hardly any shops or restaurants to eat around the place.

Japanese Bunkers
The Japanese Bunkers found on the way to Corbyn's Cove is an antique from the World War 2. The Japanese Army had captured and occupied Andaman and Nicobar during the WW2. Although in ruins, it has been restored and renovated.
These bunkers can be visited even in the Ross Island, another island in the Andamans.

Samudrika Marine Museum
Also known as the Fisheries' Museum, the Samudrika Marine Museum is home to a - beautiful aquarium that consists of many unique species of fishes, corals and shells. It has information of Andaman and Nicobar Island's ecosystem and tribal communities.
Located 9 km from Port Blair, you will see the skeleton of a blue whale that was found on the shore of Nicobar, right at the entrance. It is looked after by the Navy. A small zoo of crocodiles is also found nearby.

Ross Island
Situated about 2 km east of Port Blair, Ross Island has a thick vegetation. It used to be the Administrative Headquarters before an earthquake hit in 1941. It is named after a British Maritime Surveyor, Sir Daniel Ross.
It used to be a hub of all the trading activities during the British rule. Therefore, you get to see a ballroom, club houses, a church which is now in ruins, cemetery, everything that belonged to the British.

Anthropological Museum
The content found in this museum throws light on the Paleolithic Islanders. The museum has an exhibition of articles like shamanic sculptures, Jarawa chest guard, etc.
It is an ethnographic museum that has information about the four main tribes- the Jarawas, Great Andamanese, Sentinelese and the Onges, who used to house the islands of Andaman and Nicobars.
