We all have learned right from our school days that Chitrakoot Falls is fondly known as the "Niagara Falls of India". Now what is so great about this place that it has been compared to the most magnanimous and beautiful waterfall in the world?

Located in the Bastar district of Chattisgarh, Chitrakoot Falls is a spectacular natural beauty. It falls from a height of 95 ft and is almost as wide as 985 ft, which is one-third of the glorious Niagara Falls. Due to this, it is the widest waterfall in India. From a distance, the falls looks so dreamy that you might never be able to take your eyes off it!

Best Time To Visit Chitrakoot Waterfalls

The monsoon, months of July to September, is the best time to visit the glorious Chitrakoot Waterfalls. Sometimes, right after a rain, you can even witness a beautiful rainbow running across the misty sky, making the visit completely worth it!

Winter months of November to January can also be a great time to visit the falls if you want an absolutely hassle-free visit. The weather will be cool and pleasant during this season.

All About The Falls

Chitrakoot Falls is also known as Chitrakote or Chitrakot Falls and is located 38 km towards the west of Jagdalpur city and 276 km from the capital city of Raipur. It falls on the river Indravati, which originates in Odisha, flows west and falls at Chitrakoot, then enters Andhra Pradesh and finally merges with the river Godavari. The river is used for many hydroelectric power projects.

It is located in the Kanger Valley National Park, which also houses the Tirathgarh Falls which is just a few kilometers from Chitrakoot. During off seasons, the falls is spread into many smaller streams and flows separately in a horseshoe shape. However, during monsoons, these meandering streams flowing off the cliffs come together due to rainfall and gush out in all its glory.

Right below the falls, a pond can be seen on the banks where a shrine of Lord Shiva is erected. Naturally formed grottoes or caves can be found nearby which is collectively called Parvati Caves. Boatsmen are usually found near the falls who will take you to the bottom of the falls to witness the gushing water up close. However, it is best not to take children or elderly people too close to the falls since the speed of gushing water can be too much to take.

How To Reach Chitrakoot Falls

By Air: Chitrakoot Falls can be reached either via Raipur Airport or Visakhapatnam Airport, which are located at a distance of 285 km and 340 km respectively. Both airports are well connected to the main cities of India like Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, New Delhi, etc.

By Rail: Jagdalpur city has a railway station that is connected to places like Kolkata, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, etc. regularly. Jagdalpur is 38 km from the falls and taxis are easily available for commute.

By Road: Although Jagdalpur is a small city, it is quite popular in Chattisgarh. Therefore it is well connected to Raipur, the capital of the state, as well as to the rest of the state by road. State government buses are available from places like Jhansi, Allahabad, Kanpur, etc., that will take you to the falls, or at least Jagdalpur.
