Akbar's Church is one of the oldest churches in the state of Uttar Pradesh and hence, it is a significant and precious possession of the country. It was founded in the year 1600 by the Society of Jesus and since then, it has been a major religious spot for Christians in the region. However, today, it witnesses several tourists too who come here to fathom the greatness of the church through its interior and exterior beauty.

Being a Roman Catholic church, it has also served as the Cathedral of Agra until 1848. As per records, it is believed to have been built on the orders of Mughal Emperor Akbar who wanted to learn more about Christianity. He invited Jesuit Fathers from Goa and asked them to teach him about Christianity. He later on gave them a piece of land to build a church.

That's how Akbar's Church came into the picture, and it started gaining popularity amongst locals as it was the first Roman Catholic church in Agra at that time. Later on, the successors of Akbar helped in the expansion of the church.
