India's Tour Through Ramayana: Top 13 Tourist Destination Related To Lord Ram's Journey

Valmiki Ramayana is considered to be one of the great epics of Indian literature. It depicts the life of Rama (an incarnate of Lord Vishnu) and his endeavours. Valmiki Ramayana is believed to be the original text which is written in a poet form.

A popular belief is that the Ramayana and another epic Mahabharatha actually happened. However, many say it is just a mythological story and some believe it is true. So, a journey in India through the epic Ramayana will be very interesting.

Let us make a tour of the places where Rama travelled in India!

Ayodhya

Ayodhya

Ayodhya is believed to be the birth place of Lord Rama. In recent years, people are even more familiar with the place because of the Rama Janmabhoomi - Babri Masjid incident. However, Ayodhya is a prominent place relating to Ramayana. It also known as Saket andlocated in Uttar Pradesh adjacent to the city of Faizabad.

Prayagraj

Prayagraj

Sita was born in Janakpur which is now in Nepal. Even the marriage of Rama and Sita is said to have happened there. Right after the marriage, the family dispute happens and Rama is sent off for exile. Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana leave Ayodhya and reach Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad.

Chitrakoota

Chitrakoota

"Chitra" means beautiful and "Kuta" means mountains. Rama, Sita and Lakshman is believed to have stayed in the forests of Chitrakoota during their exile. Now it is a place at the border of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Bisrakh

Bisrakh

Bisrakh is a small village in Uttar Pradesh. It is said to be the birth place of the great King and villain Ravana of Ramayana. Interestingly, the people of Bisrakh donot burn the effigies of Ravana during Diwali or Dusshera festivals. Instead, they mourn his death. Bisrakh has one of the Ravana temples in India.

Dandakaranya

Dandakaranya

Dandakaranya was a big forest according to the mythology. Rama, Sita and Lakshman stayed at this forest for a long time. Today, the regions of this mythological forest are related with some parts of Chattisgarh, Odisha, Telangana, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.

Mandsaur

Mandsaur

Mandsaur in the present day Madhya Pradesh was also called as Dashapur. According to mythology, Mandsaur is the birth place of Mandodari, Ravana's wife. Even the marriage of Ravana and Mandodari is believed to have happened here. In some parts of Mandsaur, Ravana is worshipped.

Panchavati - Nashik

Panchavati - Nashik

Panchavati was a part of Dandakaranya and now is the present day Nashik. In fact, Nashik got its name because this is where Lakshmana cut off Surpanakha's nose. The real turn of events happen in Ramayana from this incident as Surpanakha was the sister of Ravana. Today, Panchavati is a popular religious place with many temples and sites.

Bhadrachalam

Bhadrachalam

Many places in India are assumed to be the places mentioned in Ramayana. Hence, there is a confusion about Panchavati. Some believe Panchavati was in Mahrashtra and some suggest that it belonged to the present day Bhadrachalam in Telangana. However, Bhadrachalam is also a popular Hindu religious site.

Lepakshi

Lepakshi

Lepakshi is a famous archaeological place in Andhra Pradesh. In Ramayana, this is where Jatayu ( demi-god in the form of eagle) tries to fight Ravana. Jatayu gets hurt and falls down by the time Rama arrives. Jatayu is rewarded in the form of moksha (liberation) by Rama. It is said that this event happened in Lepakshi.

Kishkinda - Hampi

Kishkinda - Hampi

Kishkinda was the land of apes (Kingdom of apes) in Ramayana. The famous heritage site Hampi in Karnataka is related to Kishkinda.

Anegundi

Anegundi

Anegundi is older than Hampi and it is of great mythological importance. Anjanadri Hill near Anegundi is believed to be the birth place of Hanuman ( a great devotee and helper of Rama). The Monkey King Vaali's remains are cremated in Anegundi. Rishimukha mountains is also very important because this is where Rama met Hanuman.

Rameshwaram

Rameshwaram

Rameshwaram or Rameswaram is a most popular place in Tamil Nadu. Rameswaram located in the Pamban Island is the starting place where Rama started his journey towards Sri Lanka. Interestingly, Mannar Island of Sri Lanka is just 50km from Pamban Island. The Ramanathaswamy Temple dedicated to Shiva has a strong connection with Ramayana.

Dhanuskodi

Dhanuskodi

Dhanuskodi is now an abandoned coastal village. It is at the tip of Pamban Island. The interesting part of Dhanuskodi is the existence of Palk Strait (Rama Setu). It is believed that Rama with help of humanoind monkeys built this bridge to go to Lanka. However, there are many mysterious things about Rama Setu which will surprise you!

Ramayana is said to have happened in an age called Treta Yuga. Many destinations are even to this day hold the religious importance because of their reference to Ramayana. Ayodhya considered as the birth place of Rama was in controversy for many years.

Nashik in Maharashtra has many places which relates to some events in the epic. Palk Strait near Rameshwaram is popular as Rama Setu and people strongly believe that it was built by Rama and his Monkey brigade.

Likewise many spots are now famous pilgrimage sites in India. A travel around these will be an interesting tour in India.
