Every alternate year, Wayanad Tourism Organisation in association with Kerala Tourism and Government of Kerala organises 'Splash' - a monsoon carnival to welcome the monsoons and promote tourism in Wayanad. It is the second biggest event after Kochi Biennale, that the state conducts for travellers from across the world.

This year Splash was held between 1-9th July. This nine-day long carnival had numerous activities catering to all kind of travellers. It included activities like mud football, volleyball, tug-of-war, off-roading jeep rallies, monsoon marathon, leisure activities like boating, adventure activities including short treks, zip line etc., performing arts, cultural and musical events, and a lot more.

Exploring The Edakkal Caves

Exploring The Edakkal Caves

The Edakkal Caves are two natural caves near Kalpetta town of Wayanad district. These caves have pictorial writings and drawings that indicate a presence of prehistoric civilisation dating back to at least 6000 years old! The caves can be reached by trekking for about a kilometre from the foothills of Edakkal. It is fairly an easy climb and you would require at least 2 hours to climb up, explore and descend.

Trekking To The Chembra Peak

The highest peak in Wayanad, Chembra Peak is one of the popular destinations for trekking. Perched at an altitude of 2100 m above sea level, Chembra Peak is accessible by foot from the nearby Meppadi Town. The unique feature of this peak is that it is bordered with the Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu and Vellarimala in Kozhikode, Kerala while the peak itself is a part of the Wayanad Hill which is hill range in the Western Ghat. A picturesque heart-shaped lake on the way to the summit is a major tourist attraction.

Soaking At The Soojipara Waterfalls

Also known as Sentinal Rock Waterfall, Soojipara is a beautiful three-tiered waterfall in Vellarimala. Also spelled as Soochipara, it means 'needle Rock' in local parlance. Located near Meppadi, it is an ideal place to visit in monsoons. Surrounded by thick evergreen deciduous forests, the waterfall is magnificent, especially in monsoon as it gushes down from a height of about 700 ft. A short 15-minutes walk needs to be taken from the parking to reach the falls.

Day Outing At Pookode Lake

Pookode Lake is a natural freshwater lake, nestled amidst the hilly slopes and evergreen forests. It is an ideal spot for a leisure day outing with near and dear ones. The lake houses many freshwater fishes and is adorned with blue water lilies. Boating on the traditional rafts made from bamboos is a unique way to experience Wayanad. These traditional rafts are made from wild bamboos that grow in abundance in Wayanad, and fastened with coir ropes. As the raft float over the calm waters through the pleasant meadows and forests, you can experience the tranquility of the surrounding landscapes and spot some beautiful birds around. Pozhuthana is a popular spot where rafting can be done over the Vythiri River.

A Dash Of Thrill With Zip Line

Slicing through the air and over the lush tea estates is a thrilling experience. Zipline is available for those who don't mind being suspended mid-air, fastened by a safety harness and zipping over surreal landscapes. Pozhuthana also boasts of hosting the longest (in Wayanad) zip line rope that lets you go zipping over a verdant tea estate against a backdrop of misty hills, covering a distance of 300 m.

For the leisure and laidback travellers, Wayanad is an ideal place to relax and rejuvenate. You can opt for shorter nature walks as there's plenty of nature all around the region, spot unique species of birds right from inside your accommodation as most places of accommodation are invariably surrounded by trees and plantations, go for leisure boat rides on the traditional bamboo rafts or simply pamper yourself with the authentic ayurvedic treatments and spas.

How To Reach Wayanad

By Road: Wayanad is well-connected with neighbouring major cities and states. There are regular bus services to Wayanad from places like Bangalore, Mysore, Coorg, Calicut etc. It is 280 km from Bangalore, 130 km from Mysore, 111 km from Coorg and 85 km from Calicut.

By Train: Wayanad does not have a train station and the closest railhead is at Nilambur, which is 50 km away. A cab can be hired or a bus can be boarded from there to reach Wayanad.


By Air: The nearest airports to Wayanad are the Calicut Airport (90 km) and the Mysore Airport (132 km). Plenty of buses ply between these places or you can hire a cab from these airports to reach Wayanad.
