5 Popular Trekking Trails of Kerala

A vision of pure ecstasy; rolling hills in verdant green that hide the secrets of sparkling waterfalls, lovely lakes, stunning wildlife and narrow paths that call out to trekkers across the country. A nature lover's gift that is Kerala, the land of abundant beauty. Lush and green around the year, Kerala presents many popular trekking trails that allow you to traverse some of the most beautiful regions in the country! Here is a pick of five trekking trails in the state.

1. Chembra Peak
The beautiful hill in Kerala is the highest peak in Wayanad and is located 8 km from the town of Kalapetta. It is no surprise that the trail is among the popular trekking routes in Kerala; considering the route traverses scenic waterfalls and lakes. You can also observe interesting birdlife while trekking here. The peak can only be approached by foot from the Meppadi town and will last the duration of around three hours. The forest office in Meppadi can also help you with local guides. You are required to attain prior permission from the forest department to walk this trail.

2. Banasura Peak
Named after the demon Banasura as per Hindu mythology, the Banasura Peak in Wayanad is truly magnificent. The hill range, a part of the Western Ghats and is evergreen and inviting. The trek is not easy as the terrain is steep and is best suited for experienced trekkers. The foothills offer the soothing view of the Banasura Sagar Dam built on the tributary of River Kabini. The tough climb to the peak is made worthwhile by the panoramic views of the surroundings. As you stare off into the horizon and strive to catch your breath, you are sure to be glad you made this journey!

3. Pythal Mala
Kannur is a beautiful travel destination in Kerala, boasting of a drive-in beach, ayurvedic spas and of course challenging trekking trails. The Pythal Mala trail in Kannur is home to dense vegetation and interesting wildlife. The trek to the hilltop covers a distance of 6 km. The trekking activities are done June to October, however, the monsoon season also means thousands of leeches! Summer trekking can prove tiring due to the intense heat. The ideal time is post-monsoon, when the vegetation is lush. Trekkers can hire a local guide, beware of the occasional encounters with an elephant.

4. Agastyarkoodam Peak
The Agastyarkoodam Peak located in Thiruvananthapuram is unique for couple of reasons; one it is the second highest peak in the state and two the peak provides a breathtaking view of the Arabian sea to one side and the Western Ghats to the other. Interestingly, the peak is a pilgrimage destination and is open to devotees in the months January-March. Only certain trails are open to public, and you are required to seek prior permission from the Kerala Forest Department.

5. Kuricher Hills
Among the trekking trails located in Wayanad is the Kuricher hill. The terrain provides easy to moderate trekking conditions and is among the best trails in the state for nature lovers and photographers. The dense vegetation provides the perfect setting to spot wild elephants. It is, however, highly advised to take along a local guide. The total trekking duration is around four hours.
