5 Luxury Trains in India We Bet You Didn't Know!

India tourism offers quite a lot of varieties for the travellers. Luxury trains are one of the awesome ideas for India tours. Indian Railways has 5 luxury trains which offer a royal travel experience. These trains are exclusively made for promoting India travel.

Palace on Wheels

Palace on Wheels was started in 1983, it is the oldest luxury train in India. The main concept of Palace on Wheels was to portray the erstwhile Rajput dynasties and the culture of Rajasthan.

Indian Railways relaunched the train in 2009 with a new design. Palace on Wheels has 23 coaches and each are named after historical Rajput states.

The train has all the modern amenities, two restaurants: The Maharaja and The Maharani, a spa and saloons. The train starts from New Delhi to Jaipur, Sawai Madhopur, Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bharatpur and Agra. The 7 days journey ends in New Delhi.

Royal Rajasthan on Wheels

Royal Rajasthan on Wheels began in 2009, it is similar to Palace on Wheels. The interiors are designed keeping in mind about the culture, art and traditions of Rajasthan.

It follows the same route of Palace on Wheels train. This journey concentrates on heritage sites, wildlife travel, etc.

Beginning from Delhi, 7 days journey passes through Jodhpur, Udaipur, Sawai Madhopur, Jaipur, Khajuraho,Varanasi, Agra and Delhi.

There are 14 luxury cabins and a few are named after the heritage sites. 2 Dining rooms called Swarna Mahal and Sheesh Mahal and a spa.

The Golden Chariot

The Golden Chariot is the luxury train which covers the prime locations of South India. It is named after the 'Stone Chariot' situated in Hampi of Karnataka. It is modelled after the successful Palace on Wheels. The exotic interiors, modern amenities and luxury cabins give it a royal charm.

The 11 coaches of the train are named after the ancient dynasties of Karnataka. The Golden Chariot is managed by the Karnataka State Tourism and Development Corporation. It operates between the months of October - March.

The train has two travel itineraries:

Route 1: Bangalore, Mysore, Nagarahole National Park, Hassan , Belur and Halebidu, Hospet, Hampi, Aihole, Pattadakallu, Badami and Goa.

Route 2: Bangalore, Chennai, Pondicherry, Thanjavur, Madurai, Thiruvananthapuram, Alleppey and Kochi.

Maharajas' Express

Maharajas' Express is a luxury train started in 2010. It covers major attractions in Central and North-West India. Maharajas' Express operates from October to April and Rajasthan is one of the major locations.

It has luxury suites, cabins, restaurants, bar and guest cabins. It has 4 travel itneraries namely Heritage of India, Treasures of India, Gems of India, Indian Panorama, and the Indian Splendour. All are 8 days trips around the major places and heritage sites.

Deccan Odyssey

Deccan Odyssey is modelled after the Palace on Wheels train. It is a venture to promote Mahrashtra tourism. It has exotic interiors , delux cabins, restaurants and all the amenities.

The tour itinerary is from Mumbai, Sindhudurg, Goa, Vasco, Kolhapur, Aurangabad, Jalgaon, Nashik and Mumbai.
