Manipal, a small town in the Udupi district of Karnataka, used to be a sleepy town back in the 1950, before it was recognized world-wide. It has been popularized mainly by the Manipal University situated in the town. Due to this, it has become a hub for youngsters who come from all over the world.

With Western Ghats on the East and Arabian Sea on the West, its location being on a plateau offers the town a beautiful panoramic view of the mighty Arabian Sea. It is located about 63 km from Mangalore and only a few kilometres from the sea. Manipal is one of the most cosmopolitan towns of India and also a technology hub.

Agumbe

Much known for the fearsome ghats that have sharp hairpin bends throughout the stretch, Agumbe is bikers' favourite destination. It is a hilly village of the Western Ghats, which is covered in rich green biodiversity. It is known for its scenic beauty and hidden waterfalls such as Barkana falls, Onake Abbi falls to name a few.

The village is located 50 km from Manipal and takes an hour to be reached. Apart from biking, people also go to the village for trekking and scenic sightseeing.

Kudremukh

Kudremukh literally means "horse face" in Kannada, which is named so due to the horse shaped peak that is formed at a mountain range in the Chikmagalur district of Karnataka. It is a popular spot for trekking amongst adventure buffs that happens to be the third highest peak of Karnataka.

Located at a distance of 87 km from Manipal, Kudremukh is 2 hours drive away. Apart from trekking which is the main attraction of the place, you can explore the Kudremukh National Park or relax in the Hanuman Gundi falls located close to the town.

During the rule of King Veera Bhiarava, many basadis were built around this picturesque town. Due to this, Karkala has a rich heritage of Jain rule. This historic and quaint town is located just at a distance of 35 km from the town, which takes an hour to travel.

Gomateshwara or the statue of Bahubali perched on the rocky hills of Karkala is one of the town's main attractions. Anekere Lake, Chaturmukha Basadi and Attur Church are the other places that you must visit in Karkala.

Chikmagalur

Drive into the mesmerising hill station of Chikmagalur and you will be welcomed with a refreshing aroma of coffee plantations. The balmy and favourable weather of the town is perfect to grow coffee plantations, and is also the reason it attracts tourists.

Trek up the Mullayangiri peak, indulge in water rafting in the Bhadra Dam and visit places like Kemmangundi, Kalhatti waterfalls while you're at the beautiful and relatively offbeat destination. Chikmagalur is located 161 km from Manipal and takes almost 4 hours to be covered.

With the Arabian Sea located close to the town, Manipal is blessed with a number of picturesque and tranquil beaches within a distance of 20 kilometres. Malpe beach, Kaup beach, Hoode beach, are some of these beautiful beaches that surrounds the town.

You can either unwind by sunbathing, watching the sunset or go on water sports like jet skiing or parasailing. Malpe beach, the more popular one of the lot, has its shore lined with food stalls with reasonably priced food being sold.
