  • 01Key Monastery

It is also known as Ki, Key, and Kee monastery. The Key monastery is situated at an altitude of 4116 m above the sea level and is about 20 km from Kaza, which is the headquarter of Spiti subdivision. The gompa has an irregular shape with low height rooms and narrow corridors. The prayer chambers are irregular, which are linked by narrow passages, twisting staircases and small doors.

The architectural pattern of the monastery represents the ‘Pasada’ type construction. The monastery is noted for striking wall paintings, thankas, rare manuscripts, stucco pictures and wind instruments. The gompa also houses a huge collection of old weapons, which, as per legends, were used for warding off the plunderers. Dhankar Monastery

Dhankar Monastery is situated at an altitude of 3870 m above sea level. In the 17th century, Dhankar was the capital of Spiti valley kingdom. The strategic location of the monastery on a hill served as a vantage point to spy on its foes, as the region of Spiti was prone to several attacks by its neighbouring states. The cluster of multi-storied buildings in the monastery gives it a bastion-like appearance.

Lhakhang, Kanjur and Dukhang are three of the five halls in the monastery where travellers can view life size statues of the Vajradhara, with the figures of four Buddhas placed back to back in a glass altar. Tents and sleeping bags need to be carried for an overnight stay as there are no provisions for accommodation.
