Sonda - The Land Of Many Mutts

Sonda or Sode is a temple town and the site of the Vadiraja Mutt. It is located in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, near the more famous temple town of Sirsi. Sonda is located at a high altitude of 2000 m above sea level and it was an important city during the reign of the Swadi Kings from the 16th to the 18th centuries.

Sri Vadiraja established a Mutt here to spread the Dvaita philosophy of Sri Madhvacharya.

Why Tourists Flock To Sonda - Tourist Places In Sonda

The temple here is dedicated to Lord Trivikrama, an avatar of Lord Vishnu. The sanctum contains a lovely image of Trivikrama and outside lies the stone chariot used during temple festivities. Inside this chariot is an image of Sri Mahalakshmi, the consort of the Lord.

On the northern side of the temple, the Rajangana and the entrance to the Mutt can be found. You have to descend 24 steps to reach it. This place contains the kitchen, stores and Puja Mandir. Sonda village also houses an old fort that has many old and small cannons.

Beside the Vadiraja Mutt, two other mutts are also located here, the Akalank Mutt and the Swarnavalli Mutt. There is also a Jain Basadi here, and a temple dedicated to Lord Venkataramana. Sonda or Sode is an interesting place to visit, for its historical and religious significance and its lovely temples and Mutts.

How to Reach Sonda

  • By Road
    Regular buses are available from Sirsi, which is in the vicinity of Sonda. Tourists can take KSRTC (Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation) buses from major cities, such as Bangalore (417 km) and Hubli till Sirsi. From Sirsi, travellers can hire taxis to reach Sonda.
