Sattal is an attractive tourist destination in the lower range of the Himalayas and is perched at an elevation of 1370 m above sea level. This site offers an opportunity to see seven beautiful lakes that are interconnected to each other. The names of these seven lakes are Garud Tal, Purna Tal, Sita Tal, Ram Tal, Laxman Tal, Nal Damyanti Tal and Sukha Tal. Sattal is situated in the Mehragaon Valley and is surrounded by oak forests. It was also famous for tea plantation during the British rule.

The destination is a mesotrophic group of lakes that have a sufficient amount of nutrients dissolved in the water. It is a natural habitat of various species of flora and fauna. This place offers an opportunity for the tourists to observe 500 resident and migratory birds, 525 butterfly species, 20 species of mammals and 1100 insect species. The regularly seen birds are the red-billed blue magpies, kingfishers, blue-throated and brown-headed barbets, Indian tree pies, blue whistling-thrush, and lammergeiers. In addition, some of the other birds seen here are the Himalayan griffons, crested serpent eagles, flycatchers, cheer pheasants, kalij pheasants, koklas pheasants, dollarbirds, leaf birds, and flowerpeckers.

Several butterfly species, including red-base Jazebels, red Helens, and large silverstripes, inhabit the forests of Sattal. Tourists can also see various endangered species of flora in the region, which include creepers, ferns, orchids and medicinal herbs. Besides, some of the other popular attractions of Sattal are the Sattal Mission Estate and Methodist Ashram, the Butterfly Museum, and the Subhash Dhara.

Sattal is a paradise for adventure, as the tourists can indulge in several activities here such as Camping, Trekking, Boating, and mountain biking. In addition, rafting and rock climbing are also popular among tourists visiting the region.

How To Reach Sattal

The nearest airbase to Sattal is the Pantnagar Airport, and the closest railhead is the one located in Kathgodam. Buses are also available from the neighbouring cities to Sattal.

March to June and September to November are considered to be ideal months for visiting Sattal.
