  • 01Kamru Fort

    Kamru Fort

    Kamru Fort is at an altitude of 2600 m above sea level, on the banks of the Baspa river. Located at a distance of about 229 km from Shimla and 2 km from the Sangla Valley, it is one of the oldest forts in Himachal Pradesh. One can find an image of Buddha at the temple's main gate.

    The wooden balcony adds to the beauty of the fort. An idol of the Hindu deity Kamakhya Devi also known as Kamakshi Devi is enshrined on the third floor of the fort. According to a local belief, the idol of the deity was brought from Guwahati.

    There is also an ancient temple known as the Badrinath Temple situated in the Kamru Fort. The history of this temple dates back to the 15th century. Every year a big fair is organised in the temple in honour of the deity. During this time the idol of the Goddess is taken to Gangotri.

    The fort is surrounded by some beautiful places such as the Rackchham Village, the Chitkul Village, and the Batseri Village. The Chitkul Village is the last village situated on the old Hindustan-Tibet trade route.

    Buddhist Monastery, situated in proximity to Sangla is a noted religious centre and tourist attraction. The monastery is situated near Reckong Peo in Brelengi owing to which, it is also known as the Brelengi Gompa.

    Built by the Mahabodhi Society in 1992, this monastery depicts the modern Buddhist monument. This monastery was built for Dalai Lama, who came in the region to perform the Kalachakra Ceremony. A 10 m tall statute of Buddha, in standing position, is situated close to this monastery.

  • 07Chitkul

    Chitkul is a popular village located at a distance of around 20 km from Sangla on the banks of the Baspa river. It is also known as the last inhabited village situated in proximity to the Indo-Tibet border. One of the prominent attractions of the region is the temple of the local Goddess Chitkul Maathi, who is also known as Mata Devi by the natives of the village.

    Devoted to the Hindu deity Gangotri, the temple is extremely popular among tourists and natives. The village is popular all across the globe for its potato vegetation as the potatoes grown here are considered as the best in the world and are also quite expensive.

    During winters, the region experiences heavy snowfall, owing to which people living in the region are forced to shift to the lower Himachal. It is advisable to carry fuel and cash while travelling to this area as there is no ATM facility or fuel stations in this hilly terrain.
