Pilani is a small town lying in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan. It is known for having a number of premier education institutions, the primary being BITS Pilani. The town is situated at a distance of 203 km from Delhi and 205 km away from the Rajasthan capital, Jaipur. The town comes under the administration of Jhunjhunu district, Rajasthan.

How Did Pilani Gain Its Name

According to the residents, the name of the town comes from the name of the famous Jat warrior, who belonged to the Pilania gotra. It is said that the warrior courageously fought and sacrificed his life to protect a fort in the town from invasion by enemies. In order to honour the sacrifice of the fighter, the ruler of the place named the town after him.

What Makes The Town Famous - Tourist Places In And Around Pilani

Currently, the small town of Pilani is famous for having a number of notable education institutes. BITS Pilani offers one of the best engineering courses in the country and holds the record for producing many skilled professionals during nearly fifty years of its existence.

Other notable educational institutes in Pilani are the BK Birla Institute of Engineering & Technology (BKBIET), the GD Birla Memorial Polytechnic Institute (BTTI) and the Shaadilal Kataria Teacher Training college. The town is also famous for being home to the Birlas, one of the leading industrialist families in India, who are also well-known for their philanthropic deeds.

Being a small town, Pilani does not have its own airport or railway station. The nearest railway station is the Chirawa Railway Station which is around 17 km away from Pilani.

How to Reach Pilani

  • By Road
    Pilani is very well connected by inter state bus terminals; consequently, road transport is the best mode to reach the town. There are direct and regular buses plying between Pilani and Delhi. Tourists boarding at Delhi airport can get direct buses to Chirawa, from where they can easily reach Pilani. Another way to reach the town is to take a bus from the Rajasthan State Roadways Bus Stand at Sindhi Camp, Jaipur.

    Pilani is not directly connected by the Indian rail network. The nearest rail heads are located at Chirawa and Loharu, which are at a distance of around 16 km and 25 km, respectively, from Pilani. Both these places offer regular bus and taxi services to Pilani.
