Local Trains To Resume Operations In Mumbai From January 29

Western Railway to run its full local services from Jan 29 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Local Trains To Resume In Mumbai From January 29, 2021.

Following an 11-month interval due to the novel Coronavirus pandemic, 90 per cent of the total 3,140 Mumbai railway or suburban train services will recommence operation on the local tracks from January 29 onwards. However, all passengers will not be permitted to board local trains.

In a joint statement, the Central Railway and the Western Railway said that an additional 204 special local train services will be run on the Mumbai suburban network from Friday. With this, the total number of services on the suburban network in the Mumbai region will go up to 2,985 from the existing 2,781.

"The Central Railway has now decided to increase the suburban services from the existing 1,580 to 1,685 services, and the Western Railway has decided to increase the existing 1,201 suburban services to 1,300 services with effect from Friday," the CR and WR said in the joint statement.

The suburban train services in the Mumbai region, considered city's lifeline, were suspended in March-end last year in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak and gradually resumed from June.

Before the coronavirus-induced lockdown, the Central Railway used to operate 1,774 services, while the Western Railway ran 1,367 services on the suburban network in the Mumbai region.

Guidelines for commuters

The local train services will be available to only those who have been allowed by the Ministry of Railways and state government to travel by the suburban railways during several phases of unlocking. Others have been requested not to rush to the railway stations.

Presently, the suburban services is limited to only select sections of commuters, including women, emergency and essential services staff, lawyers, in view of the coronavirus pandemic. Passengers with confirmed tickets for long-distance trains were also allowed to take the Mumbai suburban locals last month.

In the joint statement, the railway authorities also urged travellers to adhere to all guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to COVID-19 during the boarding, travel and at the destination.
