International Everest Day 2022: Date and Significance

The celebration of International Everest Day was instituted in the year 2008, as a tribute to Edmund Hillary, who died in the same year.

International Everest Day 2022, celebrated on 29th May 2022, has a lot of significance in the history of the country. In 1953, on the same day, Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary reached Everest (also known as Sagarmatha in Nepal), and ever since, International Everest Day is celebrated on 29th May every year in memory of this victory. However, the celebration of International Everest Day was instituted in the year 2008, as a tribute to Edmund Hillary, who died in the same year. And the decision was taken by Nepal.

In the book published by Tenzing Norgay in 2010, he expressed the perils that Edmund Hillary and he had to go through. In the same book, it is documented that they reached the highest peak on May 29 at 11.30 am and stayed there for about 15 minutes. It was for the first time a human had conquered this beastly mountain. Prior to this, many tried; however, they were all killed.

Nonetheless, Mount Everest is not the only inaccessible peak in the world. There are many mountains, which are difficult to climb. One of them is Kangchenjunga 2. Also called K-2, Kangchenjunga 2 is located in Pakistan occupied Kashmir. It is the second-highest peak, standing tall at 8,611 meters.

At number three is Kangchenjunga, which is on the border of Nepal in the northwest part of Sikkim. Its height is 8,586 meters. In Nepal, it is called Kumbhakaran Langur Parvat, while in Sikkim it is a Tibetan name called - Kang-chen-dzon-ga or treasures of huge snow when directly translated. Kangchenjunga also carries huge religious importance among the local people.

Lhotse is the fourth highest peak in the world, which is connected to the southern side of Everest. This peak is 8,516 meters high. The name of this mountain is derived from the Tibetan word, which means southern peak.
It is also called E-1. The temperature on this mountain falling between Nepal and Tibet remains -13 degrees Celsius throughout the year and stormy winds keep blowing.

In the year 1955, India found in its survey that it is 8,848 meters high. Later, the height of Everest increased to about 8848.86 meters. The height of Mount Everest, the world's highest peak, is constantly increasing. At present, its height is 8848.86 meters. According to experts, this is not the end of the mountain's growth.
